Summary

In a fantasy adventure story, a group of characters, including a paladin named Herald, a woman named Charity, and a dhampir named Lucian, discover a vast treasure in a dungeon after overcoming traps, with one character, Viper, showing signs of greed.

Abstract

The story titled "The Treasure" is part of the "Searching for Charity" series, which follows a group of adventurers on a quest. The heroes, having just survived a harrowing ordeal, are now faced with the discovery of a treasure chamber. The paladin Herald, despite his injuries, is commended for his toughness. Charity, showing gratitude, unexpectedly hugs him, while another character named Pike also expresses thanks. The group's attention is then drawn to Viper, who has unlocked the treasure chamber, revealing a wealth of treasure that was inadvertently uncovered by skeletons triggering traps. Viper's eyes reveal her greed as she marvels at the size of the treasure. The story is part of a challenge inspired by JF Danskin's "A Drabble Challenge for Authors" and is influenced by mood-related writing prompts that explore themes of exploration, treasure, and potential betrayal within a fantasy setting.

Opinions

  • The author expresses a sense of camaraderie and relief among the characters after surviving danger, as seen in Charity's hug and Pike's gratitude towards Herald.
  • Viper's reaction to the treasure suggests an underlying tension or conflict that may arise within the group due to greed.
  • The narrative hints at an impending moral dilemma regarding the distribution of the treasure, setting the stage for potential drama or betrayal in future chapters.
  • The story is presented as part of a larger narrative, inviting readers to engage with previous installments and the series as a whole.
  • The author uses the treasure discovery as a narrative device to explore character dynamics and development, a common trope in fantasy adventure stories.
  • The mention of JF Danskin's influence indicates that the author is participating in a community challenge, which may be fostering a sense of connection with other writers and readers in the genre.

“You are tougher than hell!”

Herald looked terribly wounded but unbeaten.

“You know Charity, I just ….”

The paladin fell silent when Charity hugged him unexpectedly.

“Thank you.”

“Yeah. Thanks for looking after that one,” Pike growled.

“Pike. It is not ….”

Diera stepped forward, hands on her hips.

“Young lady! Do you know how worried we were!?”

“Guys? Guys!” Lucian interrupted, “This needs your attention.”

Everyone looked past the dhampir at Viper, unlocking the doors to the treasure chamber.

“The … the skeletons accidentally unleashed the traps,” she said with greed in her eyes, “The treasure is soooo big!”

JF Danskin’s “A Drabble Challenge for Authors” challenge inspired my drabble short story “Searching for Charity.” This instalment got some additional inspiration from JF’s mood-related writing prompts:

Write a fantasy flash fiction in which a group of characters are exploring a dungeon and find some treasure. It is a much richer haul of loot than they have ever found before, and one or more of the characters try to steal more than their fair share. Do they get away with it?
