The Only Unconditional Love I Know

I’m not a religious person, but I believe in God, which is what His unconditional love has taught me.

What is unconditional? According to Merriam Dictionary, unconditional is NOT limited. It means that there is no condition, and it’s something that you give freely. We all have a different definition of unconditional love, but we all can agree that unconditional love is a love that is not being questioned. When you give unconditional love, you are not going to ask them in return. If you have a kid, you love them unconditionally. It does not matter how much they ignored you, and you still love them. I don’t have any kids yet, but I am speaking on behalf of my friends who already have kids. I know how much you love your children without limitations, and that is beautiful. Unconditional love is also a love that you give to your partner. It does not matter how many arguments you two may have, and you still love each other.

Whenever I see or hear the “Unconditional Love,” the first thing that comes up in my mind is the love of God. I know that some people do not believe in God, and I will not force you to believe in Him, and I respect everyone’s beliefs. You don’t have to be a Christian or be a good Christian to read this. I am not even a good Christian girl; I mean, I admit that I fell off the cliff here and there, but I get on my knees and pray.

There is no right or wrong answer on how you define unconditional love. The unconditional love of God has taught me a lot about what unconditional love is and what does loving someone is.

The unconditional love, according to 1 Corinthians chapter 13

  1. Love keeps no record of wrongs When you love someone unconditionally, you don’t count their mistakes or wrongdoings. You don’t record their mistakes. You are not going to make a list of the things they did and telling them, “You did this and that.”. It does not matter how much they did you wrong; you still forgive them and love them without hesitation. God does not count our wrongdoings. He forgives us no matter what happens.
  2. Unconditional love includes sacrifice. When you love someone unconditionally, you sacrifice your pride and selfishness to save a relationship. I have to humble myself for my family and friends because I love them unconditionally, and I want to keep a relationship I have with them. Just like what Jesus did 2,000 years ago. Jesus came down to earth to give His life for us. He sacrificed His throne in Heaven to save us (John 3:16).
  3. Love is patient and kind. When you love someone, you can deal with them without getting anxious. You are willing to wait for them without getting angry. It does not matter how they are, and you are kind to them. When you love someone, you accept who they are. You take their flaws and mistakes, and you don’t judge them. Just like when you love yourself, you would be kind to yourself and your well-being. God knew our imperfections, and He still loves us for who we are.

There is a story in the Bible (in John 8) about the woman who was caught in adultery, and the people around her asked Jesus to throw a stone at her. Jesus wrote words on the ground, and He said, “throw a stone at her if you have never done any of this.” He probably wrote “stealing,” “lying,” “adultery,” and sins that people have committed. Nobody has thrown a stone at her because those people have sinned in their lives. They left Jesus and the woman. The woman was waiting for Jesus to throw a stone at her, but Jesus said to her, “Go. Live your life free of sin.”

I think that is Unconditional love. Jesus did not condemn the woman, and His love was there. He was patient and kind to that woman and to other people who were there too. Can you imagine sinning multiple times and someone still forgives you? It’s hard to think about it, but reading that story made me believe that unconditional love does not take any record of wrongs, it does not boast, and it’s forgiving.

The unconditional love of God has taught me to sacrifice my desire, be patient and be kind to others, and surpass my loved ones' shortcomings. The love of God is unconditional. I don’t think I deserve His love, but it still gave me the love that does not have limitations. God loves every one of us, and He does not just love the people who are “good” people.
