The Next iPhone May Feature A Folded Zoom Lens

The highly-anticipated periscope zoom lens for the iPhone may finally arrive. But it will only be available on the most expensive iPhone 15 Ultra, also known as the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
What is a periscope lens?
A periscope lens is a type of camera lens that uses a series of mirrors or prisms to redirect light at a 90-degree angle.
This allows the lens to be positioned horizontally within the camera body rather than vertically, as in traditional lenses.
This design is particularly useful for smartphones, as it allows for a larger zoom lens to be incorporated into a thin device.
The periscope lens allows for much better optical zoom capabilities than traditional systems, which is particularly useful for taking pictures from far away.

This is according to a report from trade site The Elec, which states that Apple plans to incorporate a “folded zoom” periscope lens into the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
This information aligns with previous predictions made by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who stated that the Pro Max would be the sole model in the iPhone 15 lineup to feature the improved zoom system.
Unfortunately, those who were hoping for the periscope zoom lens to come to the iPhone 15 Pro will have to wait until 2024, when it is expected to be included in the iPhone 16 Pro.
It is also speculated that the remaining iPhones in the lineup will receive the upgrade in 2025 with the release of the iPhone 17 range.
Periscope lenses are a solution to the limitation of smartphone cameras, which have thin cases that do not allow for large optical zoom lenses.
Unfortunately, the iPhone 15 Pro will not receive the periscope zoom lens, as this feature has been a weak point for the iPhone compared to rival smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
In the past, the camera setups for the Pro and Pro Max have been upgraded simultaneously, making the decision to exclude the Pro from this upgrade feel like Apple is trying to extract more money from its most profitable phone buyers.
Whether or not this is actually the case for the next iPhone, personally, I’m eager to see exactly how it works and am excited to get my hands on one to try it out.
