The Most Special Souvenir Ever Cost Hundreds Of Thousands!

And it was totally worth it

Image by Olga Fil from Pixabay

When I was about 10, my teacher went on a trip to Spain. She brought back a couple of souvenirs with her and displayed them in the classroom. A poster for a bullfight, with a brightly clad matador brandishing his cape, and a twelve-inch tall flamenco dancer doll with a beautiful red satin dress, trimmed in black lace.

Such glamourous objects. How I longed to travel abroad!

What is a souvenir? It’s a memento that reminds you of a place you have been. Literally, it means memory. It’s a tangible memory you can keep forever.

Wherever we travel, we can see market stalls and shops filled with mass-produced articles to buy as a reminder of our visit. Sometimes they are super-cheesy and in a way that kitschiness makes them even more fun!

Who hasn’t returned from vacation at some point with a hula-girl bobblehead or a golden plastic gondola?

I don’t often buy souvenirs these days. I prefer not to encourage the production of these cheap plastic articles that are almost never locally made. But I do like reminders of my travels, so here are a few of my favourites!

Bottle Opener From Orlando

I truly did not expect to like Disney World. Honestly, I thought it would be hell on earth. But I had to go there for a work conference and guess what? I loved it!

Everything is so perfect, clean, the weather was beautiful, the hotels lovely. You do have to hand it to them. Got this little item at Disney Springs and I love the way it looks, so glittery!

Coasters From Lismore, Scotland

What could be nicer than being reminded of a favourite place every time you have a cup of tea? If you’ve read my Lismore story you’ll understand why this island is so special to me. I bought these locally made coasters in the gift shop/tearoom/museum and I use them every day. I have 2 sets — one is a map of the island and the other is paintings of views on the island.

Klimt Print of Malcesine, Lake Garda

I didn’t actually buy this in Malcesine, but I ordered it as soon as I got home. That still counts, right? The original of this painting was destroyed in a fire. I love to see this hanging on the wall in my family room every day. It was such a wonderful trip. Although this was painted over a hundred years ago, Malcesine looks exactly the same!

My Favourite: A Souvenir of Tobermory, Scotland

Photo by john mcmillan on Unsplash

Tobermory, on the Isle of Mull, is unique. With its painted buildings on the seafront, it’s an iconic image. The village itself boasts a whisky distillery and a cozy pub right on the harbour where you can sit and enjoy the local tipple while swatting away midges. We had such a lovely trip here. We visited the seat of Clan McLean, the sacred isle of Iona, Calgary beach, and had many lovely walks.

This is where I got my most expensive souvenir ever. At the time it didn’t cost anything at all.

Sometimes you bring something back from vacation that you don’t expect. Other times you have a plan. We were trying for a baby and this is where my first child was conceived, in a beautiful little boutique hotel overlooking the bay. With very squeaky beds!! Over the years he has certainly cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars and I don’t regret a penny of it.

Definitely my favourite souvenir ever!

Thanks to Linda Ng and Globetrotters for this fun prompt! I’ll bet Scott-Ryan Abt, Sara Burdick, Malky McEwan, Nishan Fuard, Carmellita, and Deb Groves Harman have some interesting souvenirs to share?
