Summary

The Left Jab #2, an official newsletter by The Next 100, covers a range of topics from politics and culture to spirituality, including a tribute to Thich Nhat Hahn, discussions on the U.S. Supreme Court, and advice for Black people regarding their relationships with Republican friends.

Abstract

The second issue of The Left Jab newsletter, published by The Next 100, addresses a variety of subjects relevant to politics, culture, and spirituality. It pays homage to the late Thich Nhat Hahn, a significant figure in Buddhist thought, and draws parallels between his life and that of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The newsletter delves into pressing societal issues, such as the historical performance of the U.S. Supreme Court, the implications of Black Republicans' political allegiances, and the contemplation of African Americans potentially leaving the United States. Additionally, it highlights cultural pieces, including an article on the importance of supporting anti-racist businesses like Penzey's Spices and another on the connection between Dr. King and meditation. The newsletter also provides a list of top articles, encouraging readers to engage with diverse perspectives and subscribe for more insightful content.

Opinions

  • The newsletter suggests that the U.S. Supreme Court may be historically problematic, particularly in its stance on vaccination and treatment of Muslims.
  • It posits that Black Republicans, by aligning with a party that may be working to suppress Black voters, could be seen as acting against the interests of their own community.
  • The article "Dear Black People" implies that Black individuals should be wary of friendships with Republicans, as they may be akin to aligning with an adversary.
  • The piece on Penzey's Spices promotes the idea that consumer choices can reflect anti-racist values.
  • The discussion around Dr. King and meditation implies that there is a significant spiritual aspect to the pursuit of social justice.
  • The inclusion of various authors and editors suggests a commitment to diverse voices and perspectives in the publication's content.

In cold January, the NEXT 100 Brought the Heat

The Next 100’s second issue of The Left Jab, our official newsletter, includes writing across the spectrum of politics, culture and spirituality. We publish twice per month to give readers a recap of our literary travels.

First, in the month where we celebrate the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we lost another giant of peace and justice, Thich Nhat Hahn.

It seems, on some level, appropriate that Hahn, a giant of Buddhist education and practice, died the same month that his good friend Dr. King was born.

Thich Nhat Hahn

The Next 100 also tried to deciper some tough issues. How bad is the U.S. Supreme Court historically? Should African Americans consider leaving America one day, on some level? And what is the problem with Black Republicans who vote for a party who are trying to stop Black people from voting?

But, as always, the NEXT 100 is also driven by culture and people. Ordinary people.

Here are our remaining TOP Five, this month, in the Chris Rock tradition. And do remember to follow the Next100, and subscribe to The Left Jab.
