The Keeper of the Things

Being the caretaker of your abundance

“Life is a field of unlimited possibilities.”–Deepak Chopra

I like to joke with my family and say that I am: The Keeper of the Things. I am the one who makes sure the batteries get charged, knows where our documents are, and keeps things in order. Because our home is always flowing with abundance, it takes some time to manage it. I find that our garage is a place to explore the possibilities of life. On my 100-day journey of abundance, I see endless possibilities all around me.

Yesterday I was in there doing an activity I like to call: pottering. It is a word I learned from a British friend, and it seems to fit the kind of thing I love to do: sifting and sorting. Even with the systems I have in place, from time to time, things can overflow in there. So, I go in for a while and sort it all out.

While sorting out the recycling, I came upon a large number of paper bags. It made me think of all of the groceries, takeout food, and other delights that we had enjoyed over the past few months. We have found joy in so many things that those bags lovingly held for us.

Next, I flattened so many boxes, thinking about the things that they carried within them. Cardboard is a source of abundance. Those containers hold on to stuff we need and the things that we freely give to others. They are vessels of happiness cradled in bubble wrap.

Going through the tools and materials on the tool bench, I recalled how many home projects we have done ourselves over the years. The colors of paint flowed onto the walls, new baseboards installed in the bathrooms, light fixtures gleaming in the hallway. We have created a beautiful home to enjoy, and these tools have been our partners in that dream.

My prayer and my intention for you today is that you take joy in sorting through your things. Know that even when there is an overflow, it is meant to remind you of your abundance. All of our possessions have a spirit to them. They are there for a purpose in your life.

Day #28: How can you enjoy sorting through your things, and give them new life?

Look at those bags and boxes in a new light. You can reuse them or recycle them to create new life. The circle of renewal can start with you. That’s something that I love about sorting through our garage. I find things I can repurpose, renew, or recycle. I also find things to give away so that their life may continue. In this way, I can take care of our living Earth.

Today I am reminded of my friend Desiree Driesenaar’s call to each of us to take care of our Mother Earth, Gaia. Each and every action we take makes a difference. See her call to us here:
