The Huawei P60 Pro Features a Telephoto Macro Lens

In various previous stories, I have spoken about different types of smartphones. These will be linked at the end of this post. In this post, I will speak about the telephoto macro lens’, as well as Huawei’s latest addition to their smartphone lineup.

What is a telephoto macro lens?

A telephoto macro lens is a specialized camera lens designed for close-up photography with a long focal length.

It combines the characteristics of a telephoto lens, which provides a narrow field of view and brings distant subjects closer, with the capabilities of a macro lens, which allows for high magnification and close focusing distances.

This unique combination makes telephoto macro lenses ideal for capturing highly detailed images of small subjects from a distance.

One of the primary features of a telephoto macro lens is its long focal length. Telephoto lenses have a longer focal length than standard or wide-angle lenses, typically ranging from 70mm to 200mm or more.

This longer focal length lets photographers maintain a comfortable distance from the subject while achieving high magnification.

It also helps create a compressed perspective, which can be visually appealing, especially when photographing subjects with a shallow depth of field.

The macro aspect of a telephoto macro lens refers to its ability to capture close-up images with a 1:1 or greater magnification ratio. A 1:1 magnification ratio means that the subject being photographed will appear life-size on the camera’s image sensor.

Some telephoto macro lenses even offer magnification ratios greater than 1:1, allowing for extreme close-up photography. This level of magnification is particularly useful when capturing the intricate details of small objects like insects, flowers, or jewelry.

One of the key advantages of using a telephoto macro lens is the ability to maintain a comfortable shooting distance from the subject. This can be beneficial when getting physically close to the subject may disturb it, as is often the case with wildlife or shy insects.

By keeping a distance, you can capture natural behavior or intricate details without causing any disturbance.

Another advantage of a telephoto macro lens is its narrow field of view. With its long focal length, the lens can isolate the subject from the background, creating a shallow depth of field and a blurred background, commonly called bokeh.

Additionally, telephoto macro lenses have a relatively narrow field of view, making it important to pay attention to the composition and framing of your images.

You may need to adjust your shooting position or use teleconverters to further extend the focal length if you want to maintain a comfortable shooting distance while getting even closer to your subject.

About the Huawei P60 Pro

Huawei is not a common name when it comes to the best phones available today. The reason for this is that the Chinese company no longer includes Google Play Services in its phones, requiring users to rely on Huawei’s App Gallery and Petal Search instead.

However, there is one area where Huawei has consistently excelled for years: camera technology. Having had the opportunity to use the Huawei P60 Pro before its European release, I can confirm that it delivers an exceptional camera experience, especially for capturing still images.

To put it simply, the camera performance of the Huawei P60 Pro is sensational. Even though companies like Samsung, known for their top-notch Android phones, and Apple, renowned for their excellent iPhone models, produce outstanding devices, they could learn a thing or two from Huawei when it comes to photography.

While the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra impresses with its zoom capabilities and the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max is lauded for its user-friendly interface, neither of them possesses a feature that sets the Huawei P60 Pro apart — the telephoto macro mode.

The telephoto macro mode of the Huawei P60 Pro is unlike anything I have ever experienced with any other phone to date. It is truly unparalleled, and neither an iPhone nor a Galaxy device can come close to producing the kind of shots that the Huawei P60 Pro can deliver.

The P60 Pro boasts a periscope telephoto camera that is capable of shooting macro shots of close-up objects. This means that you can use the zoom lens to focus on objects up close and capture astonishing levels of detail.

I cannot stress enough just how mind-blowing the level of detail is. I shot images of fruits placed just centimeters away, and the results were astonishing.

This is all thanks to the P60 Pro’s 48-megapixel telephoto zoom lens, which provides a 3.5x optical zoom and can utilize digital zoom and processing to achieve an equivalent of 10x zoom. Additionally, the phone’s close-up capabilities separate it from anything else currently available in the market.

The P60 Pro is equipped with three main cameras on its rear: a 48-megapixel ‘Ultra Lighting’ camera as the primary lens, another 48-megapixel ‘Ultra Lighting’ camera serving as the 3.5x telephoto lens, and a 13-megapixel wide-angle lens.

Huawei’s partnership with renowned optics brand Leica, which began with the launch of the P9 in 2016, has contributed to the development of these impressive cameras.

However, in the P60 Pro, Huawei’s own XMAGE technology takes center stage. The company has absorbed years of learning and expertise, evident in the phone’s camera capabilities.

The ‘Ultra Lighting’ structure employed in the cameras of the P60 Pro provides exceptional low-light performance, as demonstrated in the variety of snaps captured.

The AI mode of the phone’s cameras is also notably strong, enhancing images with a level of enthusiasm beyond what is found in Apple’s and Samsung’s equivalent devices. The AI mode intensifies colors and improves overall image quality, as seen in the sunset shot provided.

Despite the absence of Google Play access, the P60 Pro does not lack flagship features. The handset offers a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, 8/12GB of RAM, and a 6.67-inch 120Hz OLED display with a resolution of 1220 x 2700.

It is available in the distinctive ‘Rocco Pearl’ finish, as well as a Black option. The P60 Pro is an impressive and distinctive device that stands out in terms of both design and specifications.

Final Words & Takeaways
