I owe it to my mother for this tip that she gave me many years ago. She handed me several movie passes that she got through a rewards program. Thanks to my mother, I was introduced to a new way of shopping, one that rewards you for paying with your credit card or rewards card.

As long as you pay off your balance at the end of the month, using a credit card with a built-in rewards program, can help you get free groceries. My program offers either Airmiles or cash rewards at a specific supermarket. I have been choosing the cash rewards for years now, and many times, I have come home laden with free milk, meat, eggs, and fruit.

Not too long ago, I was at the checkout and the clerk handed me a bill for almost nothing — the bulk of my Christmas groceries were free. This surprised an older woman waiting in line, and she asked me how that was possible that I paid so little. I took her aside and explained to her how she can get a rewards card for free and when she gets enough points, she can redeem it for either Airmiles or groceries. She was amazed and I was happy to explain this to her.

My particular credit card offers me a quicker way to collect points by giving me more points whenever I buy necessities like gas or use my credit card to pay bills for the phone and the Internet. I used my credit card to pay a particularly large bill a few months ago, and it allowed me to accrue points that allowed me to get $50 worth of groceries.
