Next, focus on your throat chakra, which is turquoise. Above it is your third eye, indigo in color.

Keep picturing each one, then take a deep breath. The Best Energy Tools for Empaths

How to clear your energetic field to restore balance

Energy is everywhere

Highly attuned empaths feel it the most. Empathy is the ability to put oneself in another’s shoes. Empaths feel others’ emotions. We tend to absorb the energy around us. It’s hard to distinguish between the energy of others and our own.

We’re navigating fear and uncertainty about the future. The Covid-19 pandemic is forcing us to isolate, with exception to fulfilling our essential needs, like shopping for groceries.

It can be especially intense going out in public right now. We might feel everyone else’s fear, even when we’re not afraid. We pick up on others’ tension and anxiety when we began our day calm and centered.

How can we stop inadvertently catching others’ feelings? We need to practice simple energy exercises to protect and ground ourselves.

Over time, I’ve managed my energy with a few simple tools.

Practicing Mindfulness and Meditation

Stepping into present-moment awareness helps us ground. Mindfulness involves paying attention to what’s happening around and inside of us. Focusing on the breath is the best way to stay in a mindful state.

We can intentionally slow down and sit in silence. We may choose to be present for an activity, like washing dishes, taking a shower, or exercising.

We’re waking up our senses during this time. When we’re alert to how our body feels, we can sense what’s happening in our surroundings. We’ll start to discern what belongs to us and what’s coming from someone else.

Meditation has astounding benefits on our general health and well-being. We have the power to restore balance to our bodies and our energetic field. I like to meditate before going anywhere, preferably in the morning. I sit in silence or play music on the Insight timer.

I highly recommend the Insight Timer app, especially if you’re new to meditation. They offer guided meditations, binaural beats, Tibetan singing bowls, and courses. I’m not an affiliate, but maybe I need to consider it. I have the free version, which has plenty of benefits. I’m sure the paid subscription would blow my mind.

Practice discernment and inquire within

Sometimes when you’re feeling uncomfortable, it has nothing to do with anyone but you. Maybe you’re sleep deprived or overwhelmed by parenting your small children. You could be processing emotions from your past.

Ask yourself, what’s up with the energy?

If it emerged seemingly out of nowhere, there’s a strong chance you could be feeling collective energies. It’s common to feel a sudden heavy sadness or unexplained anxiety from the collective during this time. It could be one of the neighbors having a hard time. When energy from another source sneaks up on me, I can let it go. Or I use these tools, and it subsides.

If you’re in touch with your feelings, it’ll be easier to identify the energy source. Your body can show you everything, when you’re paying attention.

Affirmations and Visualization

I have set affirmations I say aloud every morning. Speaking gives power to the words. As we empaths automatically absorb energies, can you imagine how strong our words can be? We absorb what we say about ourselves and others. You could affirm anything you want, or affirm your health and safety in sticky energetic situations.

Visualizations assist in a similar fashion. All you need to do is see in your mind’s eye what you desire and intend. This helps with protecting your energetic space. There are a few ways you can do this.

First, you can do a chakra balancing bubble.

I practiced this when I was an instructional assistant for teens at-risk. I used it for grounding and protection. My goal was to avoid absorbing their energies, but not completely close myself off.

Here’s how you do it. Imagine each chakra spinning, starting with your red root chakra at the base of your spine. Your orange sacral chakra is located in your abdomen. Each time you picture them, focus on the chakras spinning and their color expanding. Move to your yellow solar plexus, then your green heart chakra. Next, focus on your throat chakra, which is turquoise. Above it is your third eye, indigo in color.

Keep picturing each one, then take a deep breath. Last, watch your golden crown chakra spin and bathe you in light. Take another deep breath. Exhale with light pouring over you. Then picture a mesh bubble around your body.

The point of having a breathable bubble is to remind ourselves we don’t need a wall. We can still be approachable and move energy through us when we choose.

Then, there’s my favorite clearing exercise, the energetic shower.

This simple practice clears out unwanted energies. You can do it anytime, anywhere. Brush off your body from head to toe. Then brush your hands like you’re wiping them off.

Intention matters here. Your purpose is to clean off whatever you don’t want in your space. Trust me, you’ll feel better afterward.

Taking a shower with water helps, too. Imagine everything unwanted washing down the drain. Epsom salt baths are a well-known solution as well.

Grounding and Centering

The simplest and most profound grounding exercise is walking or standing barefoot. I hike barefoot in our local foothills. If barefoot walking isn’t your thing (yet), stand outside for a few minutes, taking a few conscious breaths. You could take a stroll in the grass or dirt, paying attention to how you feel.

You can ground and center by visualizing yourself as a tree. Watch your roots sink into the ground below you, your tree branches reaching up to the sky. You might want to stand tall and raise your branch arms to get a clear vision. I imagine my roots while I’m sitting in meditation. You can do this in your car before you walk into a store. You can take any of these tools on the road.

Trusting your vibe

Anytime we feel “off” when we enter a new place or meet a new person, we need to trust it. Because most of us read energy without seeing it, we need to rely on our intuitive sense. Intuition never lies. Our ego might get in the way, questioning its validity. But remember, just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Trust what your body’s telling you. You might feel an urge to leave upon arrival. Honor what you’re feeling and get out of there. If you need to be somewhere for a particular reason (like the DMV or somewhere similar), energy clearing and grounding is crucial. Do a clearing exercise before you go in and after you leave. I like the bubble upon entry and the energetic shower afterward.

Final thoughts

Being an empath can feel like a burden, even when we know it’s a gift. Carrying other people’s stuff around is no fun and completely unnecessary.

There are times to intentionally work with energy, as with massage therapy and reiki healing. Energy healers practice clearing and cleansing. Everyone benefits. If you don’t want to work directly with the energy, you can move it away from you or through you.

Being an empath has taught me much about the power of energy as an undeniable force. I’ve learned to manage possible onslaughts with these simple energy tools. I’m confident they’ll work for you, too.
