Summary

The article discusses the five psychological stages an individual experiences when faced with a severe health problem: denial, aggression, disbelief, disclaimer, and acceptance.

Abstract

The article delves into the psychological journey an individual undergoes upon learning about a significant health issue. It begins with the initial shock and denial, where the individual struggles to accept the reality of their condition, especially if they previously considered themselves healthy. This is followed by a stage of aggression, where the affected person may lash out at various targets, including the news, their environment, and even themselves or a higher power. Subsequently, disbelief sets in, marked by the individual's refusal to accept the diagnosis and seeking second opinions. The disclaimer stage involves placing blame on others, depending on the nature of the health problem. Finally, acceptance is reached when the individual acknowledges their situation and begins to seek genuine solutions. The author emphasizes the importance of moving through these stages efficiently to address the health issue effectively.

Opinions

  • The author believes that the initial denial can significantly impact one's ability to process and respond to a health crisis.
  • Aggression is seen as a natural response to the distressing news of a health problem, directed towards various entities.
  • The disbelief stage is characterized by the individual's resistance to the diagnosis, often leading to requests for additional medical opinions.
  • During the disclaimer stage, the tendency to blame others is prevalent, and the author suggests that this is a way for individuals to cope with their new reality.
  • Acceptance is presented as the critical final stage where true resolution and healing can begin, with the author advocating for its swift attainment for better outcomes.
  • The author implies that the process of acceptance can be expedited, which is beneficial for managing the health problem effectively.
  • The article suggests that the psychological response to health issues can vary, with some individuals accepting their situation immediately and others going through all the stages.

The Five psychological steps in the impact of a severe health problem

Because of my profession, I see many people who faced a severe psychological issue, which is both everyday and ordinary nowadays, and these are health problems.

Health Problems.

Especially when you encounter them for the first time in your life. (It’s too many, so I will not go into details regarding the medical part), in this article.I want to focus more on the psychological part and the first reactions and thoughts that pass in the sufferer’s mind.

The Denial.

The first thing that comes to mind. We do not even believe that something like this happened to us. How is it possible (we say) for something like this to happen to me. I am healthy.

Until yesterday I ran 4 km on the treadmill.

I was never in pain.

I had no symptoms

How is it possible for something like this to happen so suddenly.

This denial has immediate consequences (for some, it is easy to perceive and realize the situation). Still, it is challenging for others to understand the seriousness and impact that this will have on their lives from now on.

Especially in areas that need immediate medical intervention.

You do not even manage to think about it, you do not even realize it, you have left so many issues in the middle, and you say that it is possible to solve all this so quickly? And if the worst happens?

And that makes it even harder.

For others where the news is ugly but not so urgent, you have some time to process it, and when the problems are a change in the quality of life and health then:

It is tough for them to realize that this is how their life will be from now on, especially when it comes to something severe that can stop your existence. In a short time, there this point is even more intense for your life.

The second stage is:

The Aggression.

Immediately the sufferer becomes aggressive.

  • With the news.
  • With the environment.
  • With the person who announces them.
  • With relatives.
  • With himself.
  • With GOD
  • With High Power

The third stage is:

The Disbelief.

After becoming aggressive in the environment and the people around him, the sufferer is not able to realize it and believe it as soon as possible. He attacks. He starts with the dissent, that he is being lied to, and that something went wrong because until yesterday he/she was okay. He asks for re-examinations, he will consult someone else, someone else will go to examine him, or he will ask for medical care elsewhere.

After going through all these stages — denial — aggression — disbelief. Goes to the fourth:

The Disclaimer.

At this stage, others are to blame for what is happening to him.

— If he is young, it is his parents’ fault. They probably did not notice it and did not see it earlier.

— If he is poor, it is his fault that he has no money. And he was no luckier in life. and he is not rich

— If it is something that you cause from someone else, it is the fault of the other person who created it.

Or the partner.

Companion.

Family.

The State.

Society.

It depends on what kind of problem it is.

And if it is medical, it is the fault of the medical/nursing staff and lastthe hospital.

According to him, this may not be good, and he has not given him a solution to his problem. (hence the suspicion)

After going through, all these stages.

Then you are in the last in:

The Acceptance.

After that you have done the cycle with all the above and tried to find other solutions to your problem, or avoid your problem. Of course, you did not find any solution. Then there is acceptance. You accept the situation.

That is when you try to find the real solution to your problem, and you stop and listen.

Are you listening?

You try to weigh what is best for you.

As I stated before, Others accept it immediately.

As soon as they hear the bad news, they may have a margin to process it, but they immediately accept the situation and look for a solution.

The other side is to go through all the above, which delays you from finding the solution to your problem.

I know it’s difficult at first, but the sooner you accept it, the sooner you look to find help and a solution to your problem.
