Life’s lemon, Medium writers and the new T&C

A couple of days ago, life handed me a lemon in the form of the new T&C from A Medium Corporation, aka Medium.

People who post their stories on Medium, aka Medium Writers, or Writers, were shocked and flabbergasted. “How could you, Medium?”

We felt betrayed, taken advantage of, and being ripped off. Many writers expressed their concerns. Some excellent writers broke down what it means so others can make an informed decision. I curated some of those in my story about how I felt at the time under the circumstances.

Many Writers engaged with Medium, demanding explanation. Initially, Medium responded with a “trust us we’re not going to mistreat you,” form letter. That added fuel to the fire because the Writers felt that Medium was skirting the issue, and was not willing to change the T&C.

There were many “what ifs,” suggesting that Medium was planning to profit from our hard work without compensating us.

It turned out that Medium never intended to take advantage of or wrong the Writers. They were acting to cover themselves in legal terms for what they were already doing in providing the Writers a platform from which they can express themselves.

When Medium realized that the issue was the language in one particular paragraph of the T&C, it reassessed the wording, provided clarification, and added insurance to appease the writers that they can trust Medium to be as fair as before.

Holly Jahangiri does a marvelous job of explaining all that in her story today.

Also, Charles Roast provided his perspective and explanation on the matter.

I am sure I will come across more as the day progresses, and I will update it as needed.

So, Life handed me a lemon the other day. I looked at it, examined it, and did what I usually do. I threw it back and said, “I don’t want your damned lemon.”

As always, thank you for reading and responding.
