The Importance of Testimonials for Writers

An awareness of why reviews are so important for writers and how to obtain them

My points in this article may sound controversial to some readers; hence I want you to consider them in the proper context.

Rather than sugar-coating the message, my purpose is to reflect the reality as-is based on my interactions with many writers in the industry. You deserve to be shown the reality based on my decades of experience in the field as a writer and reader.

Like any other consumers, readers look at the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the writer's testimonies. Before purchasing creative content, readers check for the reputation of writers and what other readers think about their content.

Testimonials are so crucial for published writers that some writers, in desperation, even pay to get some reviews about their products from the reader review service providers, which seem to be trying to gain benefits from the vulnerability of writers.

This desperate approach is, of course, not considered ethical. I am mentioning it only to highlight the real importance of reader reviews for writers and reflect on the dire situation in the publishing industry.

From my experience, a community is the best place to obtain testimonials. A viable way of obtaining reviews for creative products is to be part of a writing community.

There are many writing communities. You may have heard that one of the largest communities for writers is GoodReads, hosted by Amazon. The community is comprehensive, but it can be easy to get lost in such a large community with a big population. You can find almost every published writer in this community.

GoodReads can be an avenue for published writers in our community. I want to raise awareness for this avenue. If you are in GoodReads, you may consider connecting with our writers and creating synergy in that extensive network.

This can ease your experience. Creating testimonials for writers we follow can be a cross-pollination activity. This simple activity can play a vital success factor in the visibility and recognition of writers.

My main point is to give awareness for creating avenues for our writers proactively within our ILLUMINATION community.

Several articles and private feedback elicited from our writers indicate that our community is in an excellent position to fill a gap in building testimonials and the reputation of our writers since we have a diverse group of writers from multiple domains.

Valuable Tools and Processes

I created a community for Illumination’s published authors on GoodReads.

I also created a publication called Illumination Book Chapters to give voice to published and Indie authors to obtain testimonials in an easy way while building their audience on Medium.

How can we start building our testimonials effectively and quickly?

The activity starts with building a solid online relationship based on trust, integrity, and reciprocity with other writers. It is a matter of collaboration to create this synergy.

For example, our writers can provide testimonials for the writers they follow and know well in their circles. One of the practical ways is writing reviews on outstanding articles highlighting the strengths of the writers you follow. This simple activity can have several benefits in both ways.

First of all, it can help the reviewed writers to build and grow their reputation organically. Secondly, it can improve the writers’ review skills and content knowledge who give the testimony. Thirdly, implementing this mutual activity can create and enhance online relationships among writers.

As I explained the approach in a previous story, I will not repeat them here. You might check the attached story for details.

This premise may sound trivial to the new writers. However, the published writers most likely would understand the value and criticality of reputation building for their writing practice, especially for marketing their content, an emerging role of modern writers, as mentioned in the attached article.

This mutual support may constitute a therapeutic effect as a by-product of the activity. Practicing the approach in this example can enhance cross-pollination in the community by using core values such as reciprocity, care, support, and kindness.

The idea may be worth considering building your testimonials and reputation organically and comfortably, levering this opportunity to be in a supportive community.

The best gift you can give to a writer can be a surprise testimonial for their creation. With this act of kindness, their creativity can flourish with joy.
