STOP Romanticizing Black Pain & Black Suffering

Oppression Does Not Have To Define US

February is Black History Month and this year’s theme is Black Resistance:

Black Resistance takes on different forms and means different things to different people — Overall, it recognizes and demonstrates Black Autonomy.

My intention with this thought piece is to get us to rethink how we write about Black people and oppression:

Does it harm us into submission or empower us into Black Autonomy?

This month, I was eager to read more about Black Joy — A form of Black Resistance.

Black Joy can be found in everyday things. For instance, Black Joy can be found in uplifting stories about Black people as a whole.

I want US to not only acknowledge how Black Pain and Black Suffering shows up in our writing, but how it can become romanticized, thus harming US into submission.

For so long, we have not honored ourselves and our boundaries — It’s time that we honor ourselves and our boundaries in ways that are unique to each one of US.

Rethinking how we write about Black people and oppression is one way that we can demonstrate Black Autonomy.
