PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

Spending a Weekend in my Happy Place: the Snow

Week 66 of the photographic documentary of my daily life

It’s been a week of epicness. First, I was looking forward to the days in the alps, then I was happy as a child playing in the snow and afterward, I was living off the memories made in the cold.

I’m a winter lover. Not talking about the rainy cold and wet ten degrees (Celsius) kind of weather. Give me temperatures below zero. Give me snow and ice. I’ll layer up and I’ll be smiling all day long.

Born in December I’m in my element in the snow. I’ve been skiing since I could walk. And today you won’t get me past a snowfield without seeing me picking up a snowball or building a snowman.

Having lived in a desert for a few years hasn’t taken this from me. It just taught me to appreciate every moment in the snow even more than before. Time is precious. So is snow.

This week started with a gray day and a picture from our house. Nothing special. But it’s our home. Currently…

Friday was the day. The day we drove south. A lot of south. Until we hit the Alps. From afar we could see the snow-capped mountain tops already. I was getting more excited by the minute.

Just look at this sunset. Who wouldn’t be breathless looking at this scenery? This picture was taken from the balcony of our weekend getaway home.

This was the day. The day my dad had planned a big hike for us. Despite the snow. In the snow. We didn’t care. We were equipped for snow, the sky was blue, the sun shining.

What else do you need?

The next day we took a gondola to a nearby mountain peak. The view from up there was absolutely breathtaking.

Then we made our way down. By foot. Or on the bum sliding in the snow. I surely missed not having my snowboard with me. But it was fun anyway. We built snowmen, had snowball fights, and built slides along the way.

One lady walking past our group seeing everyone sliding down the mountain on the bum said “I wish I could be a child again”. Well, my lady, it’s all a choice. The only person still calling me a child is my mom, but that doesn’t stop me from having fun!

Growing up doesn’t mean you have to give up on all the fun.

The weekend is over. We had to do some stuff in town and while I was looking at all the fallen leaves I still felt good. The dopamine booster I got from the weekend was still working.

I wasn’t feeling great today. I didn’t do anything all day but open the door for sunset. It was worth it.

After a full day in bed, I could surely not sit still today. And that makes my selection so difficult. I got pictures from sunrise with the morning frost and haze to a sunset sky painted with delicate paintbrushes. In between, I got more trees from below, mushrooms, and raindrops on fallen leaves.

But I gotta choose one. Really?

Here it is. The first picture of the day.
