As with any online service, occasional connectivity issues or server outages can disrupt your gaming session. And if you’re in an area with limited internet options or slow speeds, you might not get the best experience.

What is Project Q?

Sony recently made a big announcement at the PlayStation Showcase: they’re releasing their very own handheld game streaming device.

Get ready, because this handheld will allow you to stream your installed PS5 games directly to its 8-inch “HD” panel. Apart from that, Sony hasn’t revealed much about the device’s specifications.

According to President & CEO Jim Ryan, the handheld will have “All of the buttons and features of the Dualsense wireless controller.” That probably means it will include haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, but it doesn’t seem to have any extra paddle buttons on the back like the Steam Deck or other gaming handhelds available today.

At least it seems like it will come in Sony’s signature white and black PlayStation 5 color scheme. The term “HD” is a bit vague in the world of TVs, so it’s hard to say for sure.

Now, I do have one burning question for Sony: why? Sony Announced a Handheld Game Streaming Device During Their Recent Showcase

Project Q is a Nintendo Switch-style device for PlayStation users.

In some of my earlier posts, I’ve talked about stuff related to PlayStation. You can find the links to those stories at the end of this post.

Now, let’s get into game streaming gadgets and the cool new thing PlayStation is bringing out soon.

What is a game streaming device?

Alright, picture this: you’re a die-hard gamer, and you’ve got an insatiable hunger for the latest and greatest video games. But sometimes, you just don’t have the right hardware to play those heavy-duty games that require a powerful gaming PC or a top-of-the-line console. Well, fear not, my friend, because that’s where game-streaming devices come to the rescue!

So, what exactly is a game streaming device? Well, it’s a nifty little gadget that allows you to play high-quality video games without the need for fancy hardware.

Instead of running the game directly on your own system, the game is actually processed and rendered on powerful servers in the cloud. All you need is a reliable internet connection, a compatible device, and a subscription to a game streaming service.

Imagine having access to a vast library of games at your fingertips, ready to be played whenever you want, wherever you want. Game streaming devices make this dream a reality. They allow you to stream games over the internet, similar to how you stream movies or TV shows on Netflix or Hulu.

With a game streaming device, all the heavy lifting is done remotely on the server side. The game is essentially being played on a high-performance computer in a data center somewhere, and the video and audio output are sent back to your device in real time. You can use your TV, computer, laptop, tablet, or even your smartphone as the display and input device.

This means that you can play graphics-intensive games that would normally require a high-end PC or console, even on relatively low-powered devices. The streaming device handles the processing and rendering, so you don’t need to worry about upgrading your hardware every time a new game comes out. It’s like having a supercomputer in the cloud, catering to your gaming needs.

Now, you might be wondering about the internet connection. After all, streaming games requires a stable and relatively fast connection. While it’s true that a solid internet connection is crucial for a smooth gaming experience, game streaming services have made significant advancements to minimize latency and optimize performance.

These services use various techniques, such as advanced video compression algorithms and data caching, to reduce the amount of data that needs to be transmitted and to ensure minimal lag between your inputs and the on-screen action.

Of course, having a faster internet connection will generally result in a better experience, but even with a modest connection, you can still enjoy a wide range of games.

One of the key advantages of game streaming devices is their versatility. Since the games are running on remote servers, you can access your game library and continue your progress from different devices.

For example, you can start playing a game on your TV and then switch seamlessly to your smartphone when you’re on the go. Your progress is saved in the cloud, so you don’t have to worry about losing your hard-earned achievements.

Another benefit is that game streaming devices eliminate the need for game downloads and installations. You can start playing a game almost instantly, without the hassle of waiting for lengthy downloads or updates. It’s a real time-saver, especially for those of us with limited patience!

Game streaming services also often offer subscription models, giving you access to a wide variety of games for a monthly fee. This can be a more cost-effective solution compared to purchasing individual games, particularly if you enjoy trying out different titles.

However, it’s worth noting that game streaming is still a relatively new technology, and there are a few challenges to overcome.

But, to be honest, there aren’t many details available just yet.

They’re calling it Project Q, and it’s still in the early stages of development. From what we can see, it looks like a stretched-out version of the PlayStation Dualsense controller with a screen slapped on — which, in my opinion, has some pretty unnecessary 5mm+ bevels around the edge.

It’ll be interesting to see if they offer any other colors, considering the Dualsense has a range of options.

One thing I’m hoping for is better battery life. The Dualsense controller has been criticized for its battery performance, so it would be great if Sony puts some extra effort into making the handheld last longer.

Plus, with an 8-inch “HD” screen, as Ryan describes it, it will need a durable battery to handle the demands. Speaking of “HD,” I’m not entirely sure if that means 1080p or just 720p. The term “HD” is a bit vague in the world of TVs, so it’s hard to say for sure.

Now, I do have one burning question for Sony: why? I mean, if you’re already at home using the same Wi-Fi network as your PlayStation 5, why would you need a separate streaming device? The whole point of having a handheld is to play games on the couch, but with the PS5, you can already do that comfortably.

But hey, maybe I’m missing something. Moving on, we do know that Project Q won’t be able to stream PSVR 2 games or any kind of VR content. This information was tucked away in the fine print during last night’s stream.

Sony says that Project Q will be available “later this year,” but when it comes to pricing, we can only speculate. Our hopeful guess is around $80 or more, but honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be higher. After all, it’s Sony we’re talking about here. They’re known for their premium prices.

Final Words

So, there you have it. Sony is diving into the handheld game streaming world with Project Q.

We’ll have to wait and see how it shapes up and whether it can stand out in an already crowded market.
