Abstract

ually optimised for portrait distances, so the infinity image is not very good.</figcaption></figure><figure id="f9e9"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*DhBbfstY9N7BTcQVD8AmCg.jpeg"><figcaption>The reason why lenses are getting bigger and bigger in the mirrorless era To make a lens that remains sharp from centre to edge To maintain the same sharpness at the closest focusing distance and at infinity… To be honest, my preference for the 50mm F1.2 is only to have good performance at portrait distances. I’d rather be small. I don’t expect/need perfection…</figcaption></figure><p id="830d">I am not a portrait photographer, but photographing children is a necessary task for me in recent years.</p><p id="ecfb">Again, I use AFC/ EYE-AF when shooting children with the 50GM, and even without Real Time Tracking on the R3, the detection of children’s eyes is very fast and accurate throughout. id="1166"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*PHmA9F2M9uF0H3fQ9NcKYA.jpeg"><figcaption>The Sony 50GM is clearly a competitor to the Canon RF50/1.2… For the sake of lightness, the image at full aperture is not extreme, and the distortion is more digitally corrected… Is it not capable of catching up or better than the Canon? … The easiest way is to make the lens 82mm, like the Sigma ART series, with a larger circle so that the edge and distortion may be better again… Or like the Nikon Z50/1.2, which is more optical than 50/1.2… do you agree?</figcaption></figure><p id="962b">Although the GM II has been designed for lightness since the 24GM, the 50GM has various noticeable and perceptible lightness in its figures, being about the same size as the ZA50/1.4 but with a large F1.2 aperture. But in reality, the 50GM is 778g, 800g with the filter. But in fact, the 50GM is 778g, and with the filter, 800g, plus the body with the camera grip (700–800g), the 50GM + body weighs more than 1.5kg at least.</p><p id="6cd7">For me, this F1.2 lens is a lens for specific situations. Even if you know, you’re going to a restaurant for dinner tonight and need a high-speed lens for low light, a silent shutter for stage performance, a high-speed lens for shooting… the fact that it weighs 100–200g is not a problem at all. Reliable and stable is definitely more important than lightweight… Of course, a smaller but heavier lens is more acceptable to many people…</p><h2 id="5c32">Clean black and white photos in high definition</h2><p id="f252">To be honest, I find the 50GM’s black and white photos more attractive and durable than the colour photos… Perhaps excluding the colour, the rest is the optical quality, micro-contrast and detail content of the lens itself… The 50GM does not disappoint, retaining a lot of detail and micro-contrast at a lower contrast…</p><p id="5282">The 50GM has a clean look in black and white, no dispersion, no chromatic aberration, no dark corners, no loss of light… The image is elegant. The presence of the subject becomes very three-dimensional or the only focus in the light and shadow… The image is a bit like the Batis 40/2 or Leica 50/2 APO, high definition, bright and clean… If I were a long-term owner and a street photographer, I would choose black and white as my mainstay… What do you think of the following real-life photos?</p><p id="101d">The following photos are for 50GM+A7R3 + C1 Pro 21.1 + Nik Sliver Efex2 :</p><figure id="c90b"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*CG0j0URzVOcFHHwL-4pV0g.jpeg"><figcaption></figcaption></figure><figure id="d2e3"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*SNu01dYEX6BDaEt21D8c7A.jpeg"><figcaption></figcaption></figure><figure id="100f"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*yimscOocrrXC3TWtBvB3Ow.jpeg"><figcaption></figcaption></figure><figure id="c7c7"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*5d36619bVohf9QW4I3qopw.jpeg"><figcaption></figcaption></figure><figure id="b892"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*bS914FWp8ysFTsFiIKu-6Q.jpeg"><figcaption></figcaption></figure><figure id="a8ea"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*jtk7thn4Os3gdHpOg-hxHw.jpeg"><figcaption></figcaption></figure><figure id="5f03"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*6yrwlwfQSlljUTBGITiotA.jpeg"><figcaption>The colour palette is rich and highly detailed, giving a sense of detail…</figcaption></figure><figure id="597c"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*JBKgmV1dvhnZMvXNVBR9nQ.jpeg"><figcaption></figcaption></figure><figure id="7da1"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*s4_VPHf6Ay91m4_swkq9CQ.jpeg"><figcaption></figcaption></figure><figure id="c863"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*e5Alg-ApH2tq

If my child had just been born, I would have bought it in the first place and taken photos of the child’s growth over the years… Another reason is that the R3 I have does not have Real-Time Tracking, which makes me feel that I may not use the full advantage of the 50GM high-speed focus. For me, a 50/1.8G is probably what I need or am looking forward to, but at less than 50GM’s price/positioning, the materials used will not be the most luxurious and unreserved class. If Sony could present a RoadMap of lenses for the whole year at the beginning of the year, I believe I would have bought the 50GM earlier than the 35GM, or I could have arranged my own lens repositioning earlier…</p><h2 id="71e8">IF you Like my reviews , please support me by buying me a coffee.</h2><figure id="f4e6"><img src="https://cdn-images-1.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:800/1*65Aqej_szpd2vRvX5CQjrA.png"><figcaption></figcaption></figure><blockquote id="1c7c"><p><a href="https://www.facebook.com/Rokkorxs-Blog-104407125169393">Rokkorx’s Blog | Facebook<i></i></a><i> <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/rokkorx">https://www.flickr.com/photos/rokkorx</a>/ <a href="https://www.instagram.com/samlee.hk/">https://www.instagram.com/samlee.hk/</a></i></p></blockquote><p id="0248">Film Preset used in this reviews:</p><div id="997f" class="link-block"> <a href="https://readmedium.com/the-classic-film-presets-tcp-classic-vision-3-e5713f4c9243"> <div> <div> <h2>The Classic Film Presets (TCP) : Classic Vision 3 ~~Kodak Cinestill 50D 250D 200T 500T Lightroom…</h2> <div><h3>undefined</h3></div> <div><p>undefined</p></div> </div> <div> <div style="background-image: url(https://miro.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:320/1*CGEwrLMwo5BPKELqHpS3Ug.jpeg)"></div> </div> </div> </a> </div><div id="4eb6" class="link-block"> <a href="https://readmedium.com/the-classic-film-presets-tcp-classic-mini-lab-pro-a71f775162e1"> <div> <div> <h2>The Classic Film Presets(TCP) : Classic Mini Lab Pro For those who like Fujifilm & Kodak Lightroom…</h2> <div><h3>undefined</h3></div> <div><p>undefined</p></div> </div> <div> <div style="background-image: url(https://miro.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:320/1*KNk1i7TM1KuDy9uh1WLQWA.jpeg)"></div> </div> </div> </a> </div><div id="e4a6" class="link-block"> <a href="https://readmedium.com/the-classic-film-presets-tcp-classic-film-styles-for-capture-one-2020-dd24b7aaf490"> <div> <div> <h2>The Classic Film Presets(TCP) : Classic Film Styles for Capture One 2020</h2> <div><h3>Background:</h3></div> <div><p>medium.com</p></div> </div> <div> <div style="background-image: url(https://miro.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:320/1*-1HZ_T9gX5tptI_R0dxBMg.jpeg)"></div> </div> </div> </a> </div><div id="e7d2" class="link-block"> <a href="https://readmedium.com/the-classic-film-presets-tcp-classic-k14-2020-kodachrome-lightroom-presets-film-preset-15b011fb5cee"> <div> <div> <h2>The Classic Film Presets(TCP) Classic K14 (2020) Kodachrome Lightroom Presets Film Preset</h2> <div><h3>The last New Year’s Day gift I bought in 2020 was a TCP Classic K14 (2020) Kodachrome Lightroom Presets negative style…</h3></div> <div><p>medium.com</p></div> </div> <div> <div style="background-image: url(https://miro.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:320/1*7fRqw8GHG5V-tFin3hkodw.jpeg)"></div> </div> </div> </a> </div><div id="5e82" class="link-block"> <a href="https://readmedium.com/classic-film-presets-collection-for-lightroom-the-classic-lab-frontier-edition-another-efa7616203b0"> <div> <div> <h2>Classic Film Presets Collection for Lightroom / The Classic Lab — Frontier Edition ~~~Another…</h2> <div><h3>undefined</h3></div> <div><p>undefined</p></div> </div> <div> <div style="background-image: url(https://miro.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:320/1*tgQnsRYJl2n9UMmztDihwg.png)"></div> </div> </div> </a> </div><div id="cc17" class="link-block"> <a href="https://readmedium.com/sony24g40g-d10644a3725b"> <div> <div> <h2>First Try of the Sony 24mm F2.8 G/ 40mm F2.5 G lightweight, high quality Pancake lens , with 40G vs</h2> <div><h3>I finally got a chance to try out the Sony A7c + 24mm F2.8G + 40mm F2.5G… First impressions are excellent, and if you…</h3></div> <div><p>medium.com</p></div> </div> <div> <div style="background-image: url(https://miro.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:320/1*NYd8HnU5gatjDTYDZqWlqQ.jpeg)"></div> </div> </div> </a> </div><div id="7358" class="link-block"> <a href="https://readmedium.com/shoten-gte-contax-g-autofocus-adapter-for-sony-fe-cameras-4b1c986fde8c"> <div> <div> <h2>SHOTEN GTE Contax G Autofocus adapter for Sony FE cameras</h2> <div><h3>After another 5–6 years of waiting, there is finally another updated version of the Contax G auto adapter ring for Sony…</h3></div> <div><p>medium.com</p></div> </div> <div> <div style="background-image: url(https://miro.readmedium.com/v2/resize:fit:320/1*DkvSX8c2fC8-kOJdK5hpuQ.jpeg)"></div> </div> </div> </a> </div><blockquote id="e218"><p><a href="https://www.facebook.com/Rokkorxs-Blog-104407125169393">Rokkorx’s Blog | Facebook<i></i></a><i> <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/rokkorx">https://www.flickr.com/photos/rokkorx</a>/ <a href="https://www.instagram.com/samlee.hk/">https://www.instagram.com/samlee.hk/</a></i></p></blockquote></article></body>

Sony 50mm F1.2 GM ~~~One of the Best / Fastest 50mm Ever Made…

I borrowed a 50GM from a friend, and after trying it out for about 15mins that night, I came to the initial conclusion that I could sell the 35GM+Batis85 and replace it with the 50GM… but after eight shoots in a fortnight, I didn’t think I needed the 50GM…

I went on eight shooting trips, including low light at night, sunny days, cloudy and rainy days, and playground… About 8–10 hours of shooting, 31.1GB of RAW, 1.5 hours of post-processing, and 3–4 hours of writing… I even felt like waiting for another week (18–23/5) to clear his mind of some ideas and let the more practical ones stay in his head… The article uses real photos to illustrate the aftermath rather than paper talk…
The last 50–60 photos were selected from over 200 to illustrate…

4 XD Speedy Focus

The most significant selling point of the 50GM is the 4XD high-speed motor, which allows for fast, accurate and clean autofocusing. Especially in low light conditions and street photography at night, the 4XD high speed and reliability were definitely felt… There was almost no “ hesitation “ in low light and low light conditions, there was practically no “hesitation”, and even at full F1.2 aperture, the focus speed was still in focus with a single click.

I even felt that I had tried the 50GM after only one hour of shooting that night, as its fast focusing and reliability were the best among all the SONY FE lenses I had used so far… I even felt that the 50GM was a lens with night vision and excellent low-light autofocus performance… Moreover, even in a quiet night environment, only a faint focusing sound could be heard at close range.

50GM + A7R3 + LR10.2 + TCP Vision3 250D Film Preset I didn’t expect to focus on this photo because the environment was backlit, and the large metal circle was utterly black. I was able to focus on the white paper in the middle, and I focused on it with a single click, without pulling the bellows or hesitation…

Simply put, the 50GM has changed the impression of slow focusing speed, low reliability and low usability of the F1.2 lenses… Or we can say that the 50GM is faster and more reliable than the 35GM, and it is quicker and more stable than the F1.4 XD… 70% of my positive feedback on the 50GM comes from its focusing speed and reliability. It is the most reliable lens for photographers to work with…

About Picture Quality

100% CROP
I don’t know when we started to do the 200% hair test, but it doesn’t make much sense to me… The 200% test still satisfies the needs of my friends in the hair count party… To be honest, the 50GM has been based on the A7R4 60MP from the beginning. And it is expected that 20–30% will be reserved for 70–80MP models. I even think that the 50GM can be used for 100MP… I use 42MP to test future lenses… I don’t see the point.
For Me, the high resolution of 50GM can provide sufficient 1.5x APSC crop mode, i.e. 10–20% more cutting space for 75mm vision.

To be honest, the 50GM did not give me a great sense of shock in terms of picture quality and bokeh. Or I might have said, “Wow, wow, wow, wow”. Of course, at first glance, at full F1.2, its central resolution was extremely high, and the amount of detail was incredible… but this high resolution was not so impressive until about the second shot. It’s just that this high resolution was not very impressive until the second shot…

50GM + A7R3 + LR10.2 Direct Camera Jpeg without editing The advantage/disadvantage of the 50GM is that the images are very, very, very stable and reliable. This is at F1.2 full aperture. You can’t see any severe loss of light on all sides, no soft-focus like before at F1.2 full open light, very sharp in-focus images. Basically, F1.2 is the working value, and the aperture is only affecting the depth of field… I often need to look at the EXIF to estimate what aperture was used to take the picture… The advantages are that you don’t have to worry about the image, you don’t lose light at the edges, and you have more compositional flexibility. The disadvantage is that the lens does not have much flavour variation. In the past, F1.2/0.95 full open four-sided loss of light, dark corners, and image loss at the edges were, in fact, essential components of a flavour, highlighting the in-focus stereoscopic sense… The image will become sharper when the aperture is closed a little, giving the lens a little more flavour variation.
50GM + A7R3 Direct Camera Jpeg without editing… I think the colour performance of the three generations of bodies is already quite good… The 50GM has low contrast, neutral colours and no individuality, but there is plenty of room for post-production and colour grading. Better to rely on your own taste in the digital age

The 50GM still performs very well at infinity In the DSLR era, the 50mm F1.2 is usually optimised for portrait distances, so the infinity image is not very good.
The reason why lenses are getting bigger and bigger in the mirrorless era To make a lens that remains sharp from centre to edge To maintain the same sharpness at the closest focusing distance and at infinity… To be honest, my preference for the 50mm F1.2 is only to have good performance at portrait distances. I’d rather be small. I don’t expect/need perfection…

I am not a portrait photographer, but photographing children is a necessary task for me in recent years.

Again, I use AFC/ EYE-AF when shooting children with the 50GM, and even without Real Time Tracking on the R3, the detection of children’s eyes is very fast and accurate throughout. Of course, at F1.2 full open aperture, the depth of field is extremely shallow and the background is almost completely dissolved…

50GM+ A7R3 + TCP Vision3 500T In fact, at F1.2, anything in the background is already dissolved, so whether the bokeh is good or not is a matter of opinion…

Lightweight?

The Sony 50GM is clearly a competitor to the Canon RF50/1.2… For the sake of lightness, the image at full aperture is not extreme, and the distortion is more digitally corrected… Is it not capable of catching up or better than the Canon? … The easiest way is to make the lens 82mm, like the Sigma ART series, with a larger circle so that the edge and distortion may be better again… Or like the Nikon Z50/1.2, which is more optical than 50/1.2… do you agree?

Although the GM II has been designed for lightness since the 24GM, the 50GM has various noticeable and perceptible lightness in its figures, being about the same size as the ZA50/1.4 but with a large F1.2 aperture. But in reality, the 50GM is 778g, 800g with the filter. But in fact, the 50GM is 778g, and with the filter, 800g, plus the body with the camera grip (700–800g), the 50GM + body weighs more than 1.5kg at least.

For me, this F1.2 lens is a lens for specific situations. Even if you know, you’re going to a restaurant for dinner tonight and need a high-speed lens for low light, a silent shutter for stage performance, a high-speed lens for shooting… the fact that it weighs 100–200g is not a problem at all. Reliable and stable is definitely more important than lightweight… Of course, a smaller but heavier lens is more acceptable to many people…

Clean black and white photos in high definition

To be honest, I find the 50GM’s black and white photos more attractive and durable than the colour photos… Perhaps excluding the colour, the rest is the optical quality, micro-contrast and detail content of the lens itself… The 50GM does not disappoint, retaining a lot of detail and micro-contrast at a lower contrast…

The 50GM has a clean look in black and white, no dispersion, no chromatic aberration, no dark corners, no loss of light… The image is elegant. The presence of the subject becomes very three-dimensional or the only focus in the light and shadow… The image is a bit like the Batis 40/2 or Leica 50/2 APO, high definition, bright and clean… If I were a long-term owner and a street photographer, I would choose black and white as my mainstay… What do you think of the following real-life photos?

The following photos are for 50GM+A7R3 + C1 Pro 21.1 + Nik Sliver Efex2 :

The colour palette is rich and highly detailed, giving a sense of detail…
The leaves are richly textured at F5.6
The microtexture of the stone under F1.2 is very fine and rich…

Conclusion

The 50GM is a testament to Sony’s new generation of lightweight, high resolution and high speed GMs… With its 4XD high speed motor, the 50GM is indeed very suitable for different types of work, from wedding, documentary, portrait, fashion, stage, commercial, family to general studio photography applications… It is indeed an all-round workhorse…

I am delighted with the 50GM’s reliability, focus speed, high resolution, soft bokeh of the GM, etc… It is really a new generation of Sony’s top optical or most technically advanced lens, and I believe the 50GM can last for 5–8 years of long-term use still in the first class of FE mount lenses.

It’s just that the images are too stable, and even with different Film Preset profiles, the photos are still too clean and stable… I often need to close the aperture for street photography, and F5.6-F8 is my usual aperture range… As I said before, the 800g weight and the huge size are not suitable for street photography. If Sony could present a RoadMap of lenses for the whole year at the beginning of the year, I believe I would have bought the 50GM earlier than the 35GM, or I could have arranged my own lens repositioning earlier…
