Some More Interesting Information on the Sony Project Q
New information on Sony’s handheld game streaming device, the Sony Project Q, has been leaked.
So, in some of my previous rambles, I’ve chatted about all sorts of PlayStation stuff. You can find the links to those snoozefests at the end of this post.
But wait up, today’s dish is all about the juicy Sony Project Q and some fresh leaks surrounding that bad boy. Let’s dive in!
What is the Sony Project Q?
Sony is coming out with their very own handheld game streaming device! You’ll be able to stream your installed PS5 games right to an 8-inch “HD” panel on this cool gadget. They’re calling it Project Q, and it’s still in the early stages of development.
From what we’ve seen, it looks like a stretched-out version of the PlayStation Dualsense controller with a screen slapped on it — but in my opinion, those 5mm+ bevels around the edge seem unnecessary. Sony’s been pretty hush-hush about the rest of the device’s specifications.
According to President & CEO Jim Ryan, this handheld will have “All of the buttons and features of the Dualsense wireless controller.” So, we can probably expect haptic feedback and adaptive triggers but don’t count on extra paddle buttons on the back like the Steam Deck or other gaming handhelds.
Now, here’s a burning question: why make a handheld when you’re already at home on the same Wi-Fi as your PS5? Playing games on the couch with the PS5 is pretty comfy already, right? One thing we know is that Project Q won’t be able to stream PSVR 2 games or any VR content.
New information on Project Q?
We might have some juicy new info about the Sony Project Q handheld game-streaming gadget! There’s this leaked video floating around on Twitter, thanks to Zuby_Tech, who got it from Reddit or Imgur — one of those places. Anyway, in the video, we see a basic version of Android OS on the device, all wrapped up in plastic.
Now, don’t get too excited just yet because this probably isn’t the final menu design, but it does give us a sneak peek under the hood. The person making the video quickly taps through the menu and then flips the handheld over to show us the top, back, and bottom parts. Sadly, the resolution isn’t great, so it’s hard to make out all the details.
From what we can see, there seem to be four buttons behind the tablet portion at the top, some holes on the top and bottom edges (maybe for microphones?), and what looks like speaker slots on the top edge.
Oh, and there’s more! Zuby_Tech also shared a pic of the tablet with the screen taken off, revealing the frame and some of its guts. Pretty cool, huh Now, I know it might sound a bit crazy, but hear me out. Sony’s been playing around with cloud gaming for the PS5, and some folks are speculating that they might also run those games on Project Q.
Exciting stuff! The word is, this handheld might hit the shelves in November, but Sony’s new cloud gaming approach might not be fully ready by then.
Final Words
At the PlayStation Showcase announcement, Sony didn’t spill much more tea about Project Q.
All we know is it’s got a 1080p LCD display running at 60fps and connects to the PS5 using Wi-Fi.
But the real game-changer is that it’s running on Android, which means it should (fingers crossed) be capable of so much more.
Can’t wait to see what Sony has in store for us!
