Travel Writing Prompt
Share Stories of Your Favorite Travel Mishaps
Sometimes travel mistakes lead to new, exciting #unplannedadventures

It’s impossible to plan for every contingency when you are traveling. The best-laid plans can go awry no matter how much time and effort you invest to prepare. Most of the time, travel mishaps are inconvenient and have the potential of ruining your trip.
But sometimes, when you diverge off your plan and step boldly onto an unknown path, you find the best discoveries and biggest adventures. Moments like these, you can’t plan for, but they leave lasting memories.
“If all difficulties were known at the outset of a long journey, most of us would never start out at all.” — Dan Rather
An #unplannedadventure of my own
One of my fondest travel memories happened because my husband and I got lost in the woods while we were hiking trails in the Tennessee Mountains. At the time, he was not my husband. We were a new couple, about three months into our courtship. It was our first trip together and first hike. We thought we planned our hike well, taking a bottle of water each and a snack to get us through until lunch. A rookie mistake.

Before we started, we stopped at the hotel’s free breakfast to grab a couple of granola bars. I casually grabbed some bright oranges as an afterthought and shoved them in my backpack.
Our plan was to hike a couple of hours on the marked path; however, we somehow took a wrong turn on the trail and ended up lost in the woods. The day turned out to be hotter than we had expected and our morning hike stretched into a long, hot afternoon. Our bottles of water were quickly gone and we were both red-faced, tired, and thirsty. We stopped to get our bearings next to a rolling brook in a shady spot in the woods where a huge tree had fallen over the stream. We tightrope-walked to the middle of the tree and sat let our bare feet dangle into the cool water. That’s when I remembered the oranges. We each peeled an orange and sucked every bit of sweet juice from it. We shared a perfect, unplanned private moment in the woods. Those oranges were the sweetest we had ever tasted, and the conversation that ensued was just as sweet and sealed the deal. In that moment, I knew he was “the one.” That perfect memory with my husband is etched in on my heart, and it wouldn’t have ever happened had we not planned poorly and gotten lost.
We’ve had plenty of travel blunders since that day in the woods, but that one stands out as my favorite travel mistake.
Now it’s your turn. What’s your story?
