Shall We Visit the Lions, PupperJack? Part 1

(PupperJack reckons he could take a lion)

LIONS, you say!!!

PupperJack thought that was a fab idea!

He’s a keen supporter of the Born Free Foundation with their mission of ensuring wild animals are not exploited in captivity, and are treated with compassion and respect.

In the 1960s there were about 200,000 lions living in their natural environment. Now there are just 20,000.

The Downs are an area of public open limestone downland in Bristol, England.

The Downs plateau covers an area roughly three km by one km at its widest point. On the western boundary is the Avon Gorge over which the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge was built. It was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and it was opened in 1864,

The house (above right) overlooks the Avon Gorge. It’s the house behind the lion display — see below.

This lion is ‘Nelson’ .

Nelson was rescued from Parc Zoologique du Bouy, France, in April 2015 by French animal rescue charity Fondation 30 Million d’Amis when the zoo fell into liquidation and the owner was arrested for wildlife trafficking.

Once rescued from the zoo, Nelson was transported to Belgium, where he was cared for and rehabilitated by the specialist team at Natuurhulpcentrum, a wildlife rescue centre which provides temporary care for wild animals before they are permanently rehomed.

In May 2017, Born Free raised funds to take Nelson to his forever home at our Big Cat Sanctuary at Shamwari Private Game Reserve.

All the lions are individual cats with their own stories, which, thankfully in these cases, have happy endings.

LIONS!!! Jack’s very excited about seeing the lions.

This centrepiece sculpture is of Elsa, the lioness who was the star in the 1966 film, ‘Born Free’, and is now the charity’s mascot. She stands on top of a vintage Land Rover surrounded by other members of the pride.

We’ll be back shortly in Part 2 to see how PupperJack got on with his lion taming.
