Sculpture:《04. Echoes of Persia •

“Echoes of Persia”, sculpted and photographed by the author. (The violet-colored background was added with Photoshop.)

Title: Echoes of Persia (Color-Changing Sculpture)

Dimensions: Height: 55 cm, Width: 42 cm, Depth: 30 cm

Main Materials: Plaster, thermochromic pigments, wire mesh, aluminum foil, electric heating mesh, relays, timing devices, etc.

Description:

“Echoes of Persia” is a color-changing sculpture. Its distinction from typical sculptures lies in its ability to introduce the dimension of time into the artwork through changes in color. It has demonstrated that a color-changing sculpture can serve as a bridge connecting the modern with the ancient, the East with the West.

“Echoes of Persia” features a modern girl in deep thoughts. Her thoughts gently flow out along her hair, reaching back to a distant past, to former glories. This is revealed through a change in color.

The artwork has two color schemes. When the heating device inside the sculpture keeps the temperature below 25°C, the artwork is in the blueish grey of stones; when the heating device raises the temperature above 45°C, the artwork turns into the earthy white of pebbles. When the artwork is in blueish grey, there are no line patterns in the hair. As it partly turns to earthy white, line patterns previously hidden behind the blueish-grey backdrop become visible (as demonstrated by the differences between Photo — 01 and Photo — 03).

Photo — 01. “Echoes of Persia”, sculpted and photographed by the author.
Photo — 02. The back side of the “Echoes of Persia” (sculpted and photographed by the author). The horse image can emerge in white color (as shown in the photo) or hide in the blueish-grey background, as controlled by temperature change realized by the timed heating device hidden inside the sculpture.

In this sculpture, a girl’s contemplation invites viewers to probe the early evolution of human civilization. Her hair flows like thoughts and memory, paying homage to glorious past cultures, starting from ancient cuneiform symbols. These cuneiform symbols, possibly unfamiliar to modern individuals, record knowledge and histories of ancient civilizations.

Photo — 03. “Echoes of Persia” shows images of Persian script, cuneiform script, the silhouette of Cyrus the Great, and the ruin of the Persepolis Palace. These images can emerge in dark blue color (as shown in this photo) or hide in the blueish-grey background (as shown in Photo — 01), as controlled by temperature oscillation realized by the timed heating device hidden inside the sculpture.

This work incorporates thermochromic pigments, an electric heating mechanism, and a timing device into the sculpture, allowing it to present different visual effects at various times. This transformation, facilitated by the emergence and disappearance of line patterns, provokes deep reflections on ancient human history.

At the top of the line pattern is the word “Persia” in Persian script. Scattered around the perimeter are several numbers written in cuneiform script, which originated in ancient Mesopotamia and is the earliest human script. In the lower right corner is the silhouette of Cyrus the Great. In the center is the epitome of the Persepolis Palace — a lion pouncing on a goat.

Cyrus the Great is renowned as a wise leader and the founder of the ancient Persian (Achaemenid) Empire. When his silhouette, cuneiform script, and the pattern of the Persepolis Palace ruins emerge faintly from the girl’s thoughts (hair), not just memories of ancient Persia are evoked; the great historical achievements of human civilization are also marveled at. They invite us to deeply contemplate the rise and fall of civilizations.

Photo 04. Part of the sculpture shows images of Persian and cuneiform script, the silhouette of Cyrus the Great, and the ruin of the Persepolis Palace.

This piece attempts to invite profound insight into human history and culture and showcase an aesthetic pursuit that transcends time and space. It hopes viewers can sense the millennia-spanning thoughts and emotions contained within, as well as the boundless imaginings of the future.
