Red against green, a shocking pair of complementary colors

Although my favorite color is blue,

the combination of red with green is in my top (3?) of color choices. Especially these particular shades that contrast so sharply:

The flowers are poppies, which have bloomed all around in fields like these, specially in those whose soil has been recently moved:

Complementary colors

The strong contrast between red and green colors stems from their complementary nature in the subtractive color scale. That is, in this scale, green is made up by the combination of yellow and blue, and thus they are “exact opposites”. You can see this represented in the following figure I made:

The figure shows the subtractive color model, where it becomes clear that red and green are complementary. Then the squares show you how sharp the contrast it. And the inset on the right is a portion of the lead photo, where you see the contrast too.
