Prompt Yourself: Thursday’s Thoughts (2)
A daily writing prompt from Promptly Written
Welcome to another Thursday’s Thoughts prompt. This week, let’s consider what it means to trust oneself. Below, you will find a quote from a book I read while recently stranded offline for two weeks. The main premise of the book is Yvonne Pierre’s struggles and triumphs over a life of sexual abuse. However, she gives some excellent advice on how to overcome any struggles by believing and trusting in oneself. In this quote, she gives an analogy of planting one’s vision, one’s garden. As you read the quote, ask yourself if you have or are planting the seeds toward your own visionary garden. Did/do you trust your own vision? Or did/do you give into the naysayers?
How This Works
- You may use this prompt to write poetry, an essay, or creative non-fiction.
- You may submit this to any publication that accepts prompts from other publications or self-publish on your own page. (Note: Promptly Written no longer accepts submissions). See below for excellent publications to submit your work (be sure to check which ones accept poems, fiction, essays, or creative non-fiction — please read the guidelines carefully if you are not already a writer for that publication).

- Have fun!
The Prompt
Don’t be discouraged if people don’t see your vision, your harvest. All they see from their perspective is that you’re watering a whole lot of dirt. They don’t SEE what seeds you’ve been planting with blood, sweat, tears and lack of sleep. Make sure you don’t abandon or neglect it because “they” don’t see it. You have to KNOW and believe for yourself. They don’t see the roots and what’s budding under the dirt. But it’s okay, because it’s NOT meant for them to see it. While you wait, MASTER it. You continue to do YOUR work and have unwavering faith! Remember why you started planting in the first place. Your harvest WILL come! ― Yvonne Pierre, The Day My Soul Cried: A Memoir
