Introduction

In my younger years, I neglected dental and skin health as these two topics hardly became an issue in my fitness circles. Most of us were taking them for granted. We were healthy and young.

Only after facing some problems did I pay attention to the critical health requirements.

In this chapter, I want to share natural and straightforward techniques that improved my dental and skin health.

1 — Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene is essential to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Tooth pain causes suffering and affects our digestive health as well.

However, Gum disease became of particular interest to me after learning about its inflammatory effect associated with cardiovascular diseases.

Gum disease leads to heart problems as the inflammation in the mouth may affect the inflammation of the arteries. This inflammation of the arteries can cause the development of atherosclerotic plaques. These arterial plaques might increase the risk of a heart attack or even cause a stroke.

For many years I used to visit a dentist frequently. My dentists always talked about the importance of tooth brushing and flossing.

I used to brush my teeth only once, but a caring dentist encouraged me to brush twice. This simple habit improved my dental health to some extent. However, I was still having dental issues.

When I was checking the dental literature, I came across interdental brushing. Initially, it sounded too simple. However, after using it for a while, I noticed an improvement in my dental hygiene.

The problem was that tooth brushing, and flossing did not get fully clean between all the tooth grooves. Due to limitations in tooth brushing, harmful plaque and tartar were developing quickly in the hard-to-reach places of our teeth.

These uniquely shaped tools were excellent for reaching into teeth grooves and removing debris and plaque. I learned that interdental brushing was an effective solution in preventing bacterial colonization, causing tooth decay.

After using an interdental brush for a few years, my major dental issues disappeared. Nowadays, it has become a healthy habit. I believe cutting sugar also contributed to this.

In addition to interdental brushing, I also changed my toothpaste. I started using toothpaste with activated charcoal. This specific toothpaste was formulated with activated charcoal easily and quickly removed the stains on my teeth.

Since I use interdental brushes to supplement regular brushing and flossing, my dental health has dramatically improved. I visit my dentist only once a year for a regular free check-up paid for by my health insurance. I am grateful that my dentist did not detect any tooth decay, gum disease, or other defects during all this time.

I documented my dental health background from suffering to thriving as I got older. The most significant impact after hygiene was adopting a nutrition-dense diet.

2 — Skin Brushing

Our skin is a critical organ wrapping and protecting our internal organs. In fact, the skin is the largest organ in our body.

When I was on high-carb diets and suffered from food intolerance, I experienced disturbing skin conditions.

I started reading the medical literature and learned more about skin conditions. Skin health was a comprehensive topic. It touched on many disciplines and lifestyle factors. I attempted to narrow it down to my condition and requirements.

Related to skin health, some interesting topics in the body of knowledge were nutrition, exercise, sun exposure, cleaning, cooling, drying, and moisturizing.

One topic missing was brushing in the literature. Coming across a tool called a dry brush and a concept called dry brushing in commercial health and fitness publications was a serendipitous encounter.

I emphasize the importance of this simple tool and the brushing process because its use greatly impacted my skin health.

Regular brushing stimulated nerves, increased blood flow, and detoxified the skin by unclogging pores.

When my skin was itchy, I used to scratch with my nails, and this lousy behavior was damaging my skin. However, after learning about the dry brush, I use dry brushing whenever my skin feels itchy. Dry brushing addressed the itching problem without any harsh impact on the skin.

This simple tool was an answer to my skin problems. In addition to dry brushing, I regularly moisturize my skin with Sorbolene lotion and use magnesium sulfate for exfoliating with soft fiber. Since then, I have experienced substantial improvement in my skin health.

As I explained in the attached article, the biggest impact on my skin health was initiating autophagy.

Conclusions

When we are younger, we underestimate the importance of dental and skin health. As we age, we understand how critical they are for our health and well-being.

These practices are straightforward and not time-consuming. The secret to success is making them a daily habit.
