Posy’s Fiction This or That Prompts

Twelve Ideas to Spark Your Creative Writing

I keep a running ‘to do list’ of things that I mustn’t forget because, when I’m writing fiction, I’m away with the fairies. I also have a ‘to write list’ in my current notebook. Some of the items come from stories that are already published but it seemed as if I could continue the narrative, but the others have varied sources. An idea might have sprung from lyrics I’ve heard or a song title, maybe a scene I saw in a movie. Other story concepts arise from writing prompts offered by a publication to which I contribute or a competition I intend to enter.

A writing prompt introduces and focuses the writing topic. The purposes of a writing prompt are to encourage the student’s interest in a topic and encourage them to write about it in a thoughtful and creative way.

Definition from Centre for Excellence in Teaching & Learning

Last year I joined in with a couple ofThis or That’ challenges. I don’t think I was the only participant who found they sparked some writing ideas on which I could expand.

Want to give it a try?

Wouldn’t it be great if, my random thoughts and combinations proved to be that catalyst for an idea, which grows into a story?

With that possibility in mind, please link your answers to this post, to let me know. And share it here on Dead or Alive Smillew Rahcuef and his Grandma Smillew love this sort of random stuff.

But for starters — Create a post, paste in the 12 prompts below and state your option preference. Be sure to expand on the reason for your choice:

  • You’re on the ocean — in a cruise ship or a small rowing boat?
  • You’re climbing a mountain — as an adventure or an unwilling participant?
  • The wind whistles around the cabin and more snow is expected — feeling cosy or scared?
  • It has shaggy hair, pointed teeth, and drool dripping off its jowls — menacing monster or friendly animal?
  • You buy a jacket from a goodwill/charity shop and find a note in the pocket — how does it spark your curiosity?
  • Your partner / best friend is acting out of character — what clues tell you something’s off?
  • Which ability would you hate to give up — knowing how to swim or throw accurately?
  • Which is more useful — webbed feet or wings?
  • Pick your skill — sleight of hand or going invisible at will
  • Worst curse — inability to lie or ability to hear people’s thoughts
  • Go back in time, or visit another dimension?
  • Your doppelganger is in the same restaurant — what do you do next?

I predominantly write fiction, so my stance is generally to turn my ideas into fiction, but there is nothing to say that you couldn’t write non-fiction, a philosophical piece giving arguments for and against one of the ‘couplets’ of choices. Or an ‘about me’ post stating what influenced your preference.

Have at it my friends, I can’t wait to see what is generated by my ‘this or that’ list.
