Positive thinking is not enough

Have you ever tried positive thinking?
How long until you gave up because it didn’t work?
Sorry, now I’m being negative.
Positive thinking has real benefits. Positive thinkers see life as an opportunity.
Positive thinkers approach unfavorable circumstances with a good attitude, thinking the best will happen, not the worst.
Positive thinkers do not ignore logic or the facts surrounding negative news; instead, they look beyond a setback or problem without being overwhelmed.
Being open to opportunities while looking for the best outcome is the approach that helps positive thinkers find success.
Research has shown that positive thinking can improve:
- stress management (1)(4)(8)
- quality of life and mental health (2)(6)(9)
- creative thinking (3)(10)(12)
- and physical health (5)(7)(11)
However, positive thinking by itself falls short
All external solutions are temporary
Positive thinking requires constant self-awareness and effort. It can be a struggle to always “ try” to think positive thoughts.
So we try positive thinking, and things go well for a while but quickly stop working.
Frustrated, we become disillusioned with personal development. Positive thinking seems like a great idea, but it doesn’t work for us. Despite our best efforts, we keep falling back into our old negative thought patterns.
How the human brain works
We will always fall back into negative thinking because our brains have been wired that way.
Since the moment we are born, the messages we receive, mostly from our parents, program our brains.
These programs create our beliefs about the world and ourselves.
Unfortunately, our parents pass their negative programs on to us. Most of our conditioning is negative.
The brain wires in those messages it receives most often. Our behavior flows from these programs.
In What to Say When You Talk to Yourself, Shad Helmstetter explains,
“Programming creates beliefs, beliefs create attitudes, attitudes create feelings, feelings determine actions and actions create results.”
The human brain works in this specific way. If you want to make a permanent change, you must work along with the brain.
You change your behavior permanently when you change your programming.
You can decide to think positively, but the brain wants more. Your brain says, “I need more. Tell me exactly what you want. Give me a word-for-word directive. Give me specific instructions, and I will give you what you want.”
The language of success
Successful people use a different language with a unique vocabulary.
Anyone can learn this language with repetition. If we learn a new language, we will think in that new language.
Your old negative programming stops positive thinking from working long term.
You can try to think positively, which may work for a while, but you will eventually revert to your old, comfortable, negative programs.
To make positive thinking work, you must give your brain a new, specific, word-for-word set of directions—a new language.
Throw out the old and replace it, thought by thought and word for word, with the new.
Positive thinking works when negative thoughts are immediately replaced with their opposite through self-talk.
“The right kind of self-talk is the key to making all positive thinking work.”
