Quickie: People Seeking Divorce Spikes on the First Monday of the Year
Why the holiday season makes many people decide to end their marriages

Sunday was all about connection because the first Sunday of the year is the busiest time of year for dating apps. Unfortunately, the day after “Dating Sunday” is all about disconnection, as the first Monday of the year, known as “Divorce Day” or “Divorce Monday”, is when divorce lawyers see a spike in people looking to dissolve their marriages. It’s also the day when there’s an increase in filed divorce petitions.

“It’s the day where couples who were tolerating each other during the intense holiday season decide that they want to start the new year afresh, resulting in a surge of divorce inquiries to Google search and divorce lawyers alike,” said breakup coach Cherlyn Chong in an article on Insider.
In other cases, couples who know that they want to divorce spend one last holiday season together in order to give the gift of an intact family to their children one last time. Also, the stress caused by the holidays, unrealistic expectations for the holidays that cause disappointment, and the desire to generally explore new things and a single life for the new year are some of the other reasons for the increase in divorce filings and inquiries on Divorce Monday.
