Summary

The protagonist, grieving over a mysterious letter that vanished in smoke, reflects on past losses, particularly the death of their pet rock Glommy, and resolves to move on, considering various coping mechanisms.

Abstract

After witnessing the enigmatic letter disappear in a poof of smoke, the protagonist is overwhelmed with a profound sense of sadness, reminiscent of the grief experienced over their pet rock's demise. They acknowledge the intensity of their emotions, which were once similarly invested in Glommy, a rock they believed would live forever until it was tragically devoured by a neighbor's cat. In a moment of clarity, the protagonist decides against giving the letter the same emotional weight as their late pet. Rising from the floor, they resolve to let go of the letter and contemplate different ways to cope with the loss, including writing a response to the unknown sender, seeking therapy, or indulging in chocolate cake.

Opinions

  • The protagonist draws a parallel between the loss of the letter and the death of their pet rock, suggesting a deep emotional connection to inanimate objects.
  • There is a sense of irony and dark humor in the portrayal of the pet rock's death, as the protagonist's reaction to the letter's loss is compared to their over-the-top response to the rock's demise.
  • The protagonist's decision to not invest emotions in the letter indicates a growth in their ability to manage their feelings and a desire to move forward.
  • The options provided for coping with the loss reflect a range of emotional processing strategies, from introspective writing to seeking professional help or finding comfort in food.

After watching the poof of smoke steal away the mysterious letter, you curl into yourself on the floor. You had never felt this kind of sadness, heartbreak, and loss in your entire life.

Until you realize this isn’t true. Even if it is a line from your favorite band’s first album. The same one you played on repeat as you bawled through the death of your pet rock last spring. You were sure it was going to live forever and then one morning, waking to the strangled sound of crunching gravel, you witnessed true horror.

Your neighbor's cat boasted a wonky, stupid grin like Alice’s animated Cheshire cat wore on its bruise-colored face. As it munched then swallowed helpless Glommy, short for Conglomerate, you shrieked Friday-the-Thirteenth-style.

You would not give the same power and emotion to this letter that you had given your bestest of friends. The one you had rescued from the local gravel pit just before tripping into the backhoe and breaking your ankle.

Carefully rising from your position on the floor, you dust off your pants and decide it is time to just let go of this letter. What will help you do that, you wonder?
