“So Mom,” you breathe into the phone, when she has finally picked it up after 12 rings. “How are you?”
“Oh, honey, hey!” She sounds a bit breathless, as though she actually jogged to the kitchen where her 400-pound phone the color of dog snot is screwed to the wall. If only she would give up the antique and get a cell phone! But she loves that rotary dialer more than she adored your childhood chihuahua, her favorite Sunday dress, and, apparently your own Dad. At least the phone is still around.
“What were you doing?” you ask, mildly concerned. “You sound like you’re huffing a bit!”
“Oh…I was just in the back garden…with my new yoga instructor! He says I’m acing the Downward Dog!”
“Congrats!” you shake your head, ignoring the questions that want to suicide their way right from your brain and out your mouth. Instead, you explain the situation to her. You know she might be slightly anxious but you’d rather be honest.
“Oh, honey,” she sighs louder than a bagpipe next to an echo-y Scottish loch. “That sounds a bit dangerous and also wow, intriguing! I’m going to come along, okay, honey? And Carl, too. He adorrrres adventure!”
“Who’s Carl?” You inquire.
“My yoga instructor! You’ll love him! Listen, I’ll bring the Ronald McDonald costume and meet you at your place in, say, an hour and a half? Oh, this is terribly exciting! Judy and Laura are going to eat their own bowels out with jealousy!”
Options:
👉Insist she comes alone.
👉Suggest she call Judy and Laura to join — the more the merrier!
