Octopus (part 3): Escape Artists
Octopuses are known for their intelligence, problem-solving skills, and their ability to escape from tanks.

While most aquatic animals are unable to escape from their tanks, octopuses have been known to find ways out of their enclosures, even in aquariums that were designed to be escape-proof.
One of the reasons why octopuses are so good at escaping from tanks is their intelligence. Octopuses are some of the smartest animals in the ocean, and they are capable of learning and problem-solving. They have complex nervous systems and can navigate mazes, solve puzzles, and even use tools to get what they want.
Another reason why octopuses are so good at escaping from tanks is their ability to squeeze through small spaces. Unlike most animals, octopuses have no bones in their bodies. Instead, they have a soft, flexible body that can fit through almost any opening. This allows them to escape from tanks by slipping through small openings in the lid or even climbing up the sides of the tank.
Octopuses also have a remarkable ability to change their color and texture, which helps them blend in with their surroundings. They can match the color and texture of the surface they are on, making them almost invisible to the human eye. This makes it difficult for aquarium staff to keep track of them and can contribute to their ability to escape.
In some cases, octopuses have even been known to deliberately cause damage to their tanks in order to facilitate their escape. They have been observed removing lids, unplugging pumps, and even short-circuiting lights in order to create a distraction and make their escape.
While the ability of octopuses to escape from tanks can be frustrating for aquarium staff, it is a testament to their intelligence and adaptability. It also highlights the importance of providing these animals with the proper care and stimulation they need to thrive in captivity.
