Summary

The NRA has launched a new line of "Thoughts & Prayers" branded merchandise, including firearms, to address recent tragedies and bolster revenue following bankruptcy.

Abstract

In response to the recent mass shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde, and Tulsa, and facing financial challenges after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has introduced a new product line named "Thoughts & Prayers." This initiative, which includes the "MDRx Thoughts & Prayers Peacemaker Assault Rifle" manufactured by Utah's Desert Tech, is part of the NRA's strategy to engage in socially responsible capitalism. The products are marketed with a touch of irony, as the term "thoughts and prayers" is commonly used to express condolences without implying action. The NRA's CEO, Wayne LaPierre, has defended the move, suggesting that the merchandise allows for a tangible expression of support for victims' families by providing them with the means to defend themselves. The products are available for purchase on "Meanol'sumbitches.com," with special pricing and discount codes. Additionally, the NRA is expanding its product range to include branded hollow-point bullets, night vision goggles, plastic explosives, and monogrammed Kevlar onesies. The article also provides links to related pieces on Medium, highlighting the NRA's controversial stance on gun control and its influence on American politics.

Opinions

  • The NRA is criticized for commodifying the phrase "thoughts and prayers," which is often seen as an insufficient response to gun violence.
  • Wayne LaPierre's statement suggests a satirical take on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, implying that the NRA's approach to social responsibility is superficial.
  • The article implies that the NRA is more focused on revenue generation than on meaningful action to prevent gun violence, as evidenced by the launch of a merchandise line in the wake of tragic events.
  • The NRA's partnership with Desert Tech and other companies for branded merchandise, including weapons, indicates a continuation of their pro-gun rights stance despite public outcry over gun violence.
  • The introduction of an NFT version of the assault rifle for underage or criminally insane individuals suggests a controversial and tone-deaf approach to gun accessibility and mental health issues.
  • The article's tone, including the choice of website names like "Meanol'sumbitches.com" and product names like the "Estwing Black Eagle Combat Tomahawk Axe," conveys a sense of dark humor and critique of the NRA's marketing tactics.

LaPierre: ‘Let’s address these tragedies once and for all’

Coming out of its annual convention in Houston, the NRA announced a new line of branded merchandise — Thoughts & Prayers.

According to CEO Wayne LaPierre,

“We wanted to address these tragedies in Buffalo, Uvalde, Tulsa. At the same time, in the wake of our Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, we need fresh sources of revenue. We can’t keep tin-cupping Pierce Bullet Seal Target Systems and Springfield Armory, Inc. forever. So we said ‘Hey, let’s jump on the Environmental, Social, and Governance bandwagon and practice socially responsible capitalism.’

After thinking a lot and praying over it, we named our new line of merchandise Thoughts & Prayers. That’s what we need now, right? Thoughts and Prayers.”

Built by Utah’s Desert Tech weapons manufacturer, the centerpiece of the line is the MDRx Thoughts & Prayers Peacemaker Assault Rifle, shown above. For a limited time, the MDRx is available on Meanol’sumbitches.com for the special price of $666.66. Use coupon code THOUGHTS’NPRAYERS or NRA💖.

Buyers under 18 and the criminally insane can purchase an NFT version of the weapon, redeemable for an actual assault rifle when they reach legal age or no longer believe they’re the sacred spawn of Beelzebub, respectively.

According to a spokesperson, the NRA is leveraging similar partnerships to produce branded hollow-point bullets, night vision goggles, plastic explosives, and monogrammed Kevlar onesies.

LaPierre is thrilled to offer politicians and patriots a robust menu of options when they send thoughts and prayers.

“You can still send the traditional thoughts and prayers. You know, you look kind of solemn and stare off into space for maybe thirty seconds trying not to think about lunchtime. But maybe you want to do a little more. So when you send your thoughts and prayers to a victim’s family, you’re actually sending the assault rifle or maybe our branded Estwing Black Eagle Combat Tomahawk Axe. That bad boy’s a keeper!

So now they’re armed, they can stand their ground. You know that nothing bad will ever happen to them again. So you get that warm and fuzzy feeling inside. No price on that.”
