New Writers Welcome BootCamp Week 8. Overhead Press.

The best upper body exercises

The overhead press is the #1 upper body exercise for beginners. I’m going to share the #2 exercise with you next week.

Am I kidding you? Everyone knows bench press is THE best upper body exercise. People flock into gyms and queue for benches. Barbells are always busy, 4–5 people keep changing weights on them.

Benefits of the overhead press vs. bench press:

  • It’s a functional movement. Examples? Put your dishes up high after you wash them. Place items like books on a high shelf.
  • You need less weight to make it work. Even zero weight will still do.
  • Way safer than the bench press
  • Great for your posture

The bodyweight training camp focuses on the 2 best upper body exercises — pushups and pullups. Yet many people I know struggle to do pushups right. Not many people can do pullups at all. Can you?

Benefits of the overhead press vs. pushups:

  • A beginner exercise anyone can do
  • Can be done anywhere. You need a clean surface or a mat for pushups
  • Overhead position is the weakest for your upper body. You get the most results if you train your weakest spot.
