Myths & Stereotypes Every Digital Nomad Encounters
As much as it may look like we’re on holiday 24/7 — we’re not.
In 2007, the term ‘digital nomad’ became a hot topic when Tim Ferriss wrote about his 4-Hour Work Week. That, plus a pandemic has resulted in an ever-growing community of nomads. However, many people wonder if it’s at all possible to live this lifestyle. The result? inaccurate assumptions of what it’s all really about.
Here are the most common stereotypes working digital nomads have to put up with:
#1. Being a nomad is only for young people: Social media probably doesn’t help this stereotype…assumptions aside — the older generation can certainly fit this lifestyle. More life experience, more knowledge, and potentially more money in the bank! Don’t ever think you’re too old to start.
#2. It’s tough to find accommodation: I understand why this may put people off following their dream of being nomadic. Often people either hate moving or think they’ll struggle to find a place they can afford (it’s common that people compare prices for a week stay in the height of summer, but really you ought to look at month long stays in the low season). I’ve found that 2–3 months’ stays can be easier to find discounts and services like RemoteBase help you find the best deals here.
#3. Nomads are always on holiday: I wish I was on holiday 24/7 but sadly this isn’t true. Most of the nomads I know work every day and often through the weekend too. The main difference is that we operate with flexible working and it helps not being tied to an office. This allows you to work at your own pace, starting a little later, or finishing earlier — it’s totally up to you.
#4. You need to be rich to live the nomadic lifestyle: Not true! I actually spend way less than what I was spending when living in one place and life is 10x better. My laptop and I can be anywhere in the world, soaking up the sun, culture, and good vibes. Living cheaper allows me to invest even more in my future travels… and the cycle continues.
#5. Nomads are constantly travelling: Can you imagine how exhausting this would be? Most nomads I know travel slow, allowing them to prioritise their mental health and physical well-being. Always being on the move is so draining and becomes almost impossible to keep up that pace alongside a full-time job.
Outside these common stereotypes, the digital nomad lifestyle can be an exciting and open way to live but it also requires a lot of discipline to stay motivated and productive.
