DIGITAL NOMADS
Could You Live Full-time in an Airbnb?
Interested in living a nomadic lifestyle? Now’s your chance.
My answer is yes, I’ve been doing it for over 3 years now. I travel full time with my partner Chris and living in many Airbnb has taught us a lot. It’s taught us how to adapt our lifestyles to the culture and people around us. It’s taught us a lot about the long-term accommodation prices and how to find great discounted apartments. As well as the potential of Airbnb as a platform — I wouldn’t say we’ve seen it all, but we’ve seen a lot.
Being location independent, I would much rather stay in apartments than hotels or hostels. You need to make each base your home, especially if you’re working — this is so important for your work-life balance. Desk space and stable Wi-Fi are essential for remote workers.
Some tips on how to choose the best apartment:
- Make sure you select all the filters so you don’t get to the apartment hoping for a washing machine and wonder where it is (we’ve definitely learnt from that mistake).
- Thoroughly check the reviews and pictures so you know what to expect.
- Before you book, ask the host to confirm the Wi-Fi speed — so important to make sure this is a good enough speed for your day job.
- Try to have a separate space where you can work from, to support your work-life balance.
With these filters, preferences and essential needs all in mind, it could be worth spending a little more than usual to ensure a smooth stay, remember you’ll be making this place your home for the next 1–3 months (or longer in some cases) so make sure it's somewhere you feel you could live and not just visit for a quick weekend.
Is this lifestyle for you? Now is your time to find out.
Airbnb is taking the nomad lifestyle to a whole new level, and anyone is welcome to apply. With the launch of their new ‘Live Anywhere on Airbnb’ program, they are looking for 12 people to live and work for the next 10 months from Airbnb listings. Airbnb will support you (and 3 more companions) with travel and accommodation expenses in return for you to share your experiences so Airbnb can better improve their platform and accommodate more nomads.
For me, the idea of being location independent is freedom. Having the opportunity to roam free in the world with no constraints is truly what makes my life of travel an ongoing, amazing journey and adventure. Through the use of Airbnb, I have the ability to call anywhere, my home.
Top tip: Book somewhere for 2 months and live as a local would. You’ll never know if the lifestyle is for you or not if you don’t make the first move…. so, what are you waiting for?
Apply today & imagine being able to call anywhere, your home.
