My Weekly Trip Down the Medium Rabbit Hole #19
Bit off-piste this week. A competition winner, 6 articles and one of mine. Yes, that makes 8. That’s more than my usual 5. I can count.
I’ve had a bitty week. Spent a lot of it having 7,000 brilliant ideas a day on what I was going to do on Medium only to dump them all after five minutes. Brain has been all over the place.
And then you lovely people gave me a big headache. So many good articles! It’d be easier for me if you all got together and just arranged to write 5 good ones between you so I didn’t have to choose.
So, we have a longer list because I couldn’t choose, and I have a competition winner. Let’s start there.
Last week, I used the phrase ‘bear with’ in my Rabbit Hole. I said that the first person who told me where that came from (the BBC TV series, Miranda) could choose one of their articles for a special slot. The lovely Barry Robinson won this probably quite worthless prize.
barry robinson — How proud can you be?
Barry published this story before I joined Medium, so it was new to me. I’d have rabbit-holed it anyway if he had published it this week because it’s such a sweet and heartwarming story about family bonds, love and respect. I don’t want to spoil it for you — just read it.
Uvebruce — Bad Customers, House Wine, and Friday Nights Are a Bad Combination and We Don’t Want Your Restaurant Here. Go away.
There are some fantastic writers on Medium but not all of them are good storytellers. Uvebruce is both. He can also be outrageously funny and weepy-eyed moving. He’s written a couple of pieces recently on his experiences as a restauranteur. I was going to put the first one I read in here this week. But, then I read the next and wanted to include that too.
I can’t choose between them. They are both brilliant reads. If I were you, I’d read both. The first one will make you laugh a lot; the second might also make you cry.
Denise P King — My Father’s Pandora’s Box
I really enjoyed this — it’s a thoughtful and engrossing read. Denise weaves a story about her family history and what she learned after receiving a bequest after her grandmother’s death. Sometimes, we learn more after someone dies than we did when they were alive.
Jay Vaananen — Get the Heck out of Here With Your 30 Seconds, I’m Not Reading Your Article
I’m sure Jay won’t mind me calling him a forthright tell-it-as-it-is writer. He likes a rant. This is a short but effective piece on why mentioning the 30-second rule in your articles is a bad idea.
Smillew Rahcuef — The First Thing I Would Change as the New Medium CEO
I’m tired of getting follows from people I don’t know who couldn’t identify something I’ve written if their lives depended on it. If you feel the same, then read this. Smillew explains how multiple following tactics harm the platform and its writers. His second idea at the end about how to reduce spammy, scammy and stupid engagement behaviour is also genius.
Bette A. Ludwig 🔍 — Mansplaining and the Screaming Silence of Female Inequality
If you’ve read Bette’s articles before, then you know that she is a smart and readable writer who creates well-researched and thoughtful articles. This is an eye-opening read. It should be required reading in schools. If you haven’t read it yet, then grab a coffee and go in.
Blowing my own trumpet
I’ve decided to put one of my old articles in here this week. I’ve been looking at the early stuff I wrote on the site. Like most people, I found that these articles died a quick death. I quite like this one. It’s not as grim as the title suggests.
OK, we’re done. Phew. Have a lovely weekend!
Want to read more Rabbit Hole articles? They’re all in this list. If you save the list you’ll get an email/site notification whenever I add a new article to it. It’s a once-a-week thing, so I won’t break your Inbox.
