What will make you money on medium and how much? That’s what you want to know right?

Well you might not like the answer that much, in April I wrote an article every day (and a few days I wrote two). Well actually I binge wrote in a handful of sittings but I published at least an article every day.

So your wondering how much each of those articles earned. Many earned $0. But …

My top 5 earners for April were:

For: $2.20

It’s a very quick overview of a few of the tells of a narcissist. (like lacking empathy) This was a very quick write up and I’m thinking that I should probably make a more detailed one, where I actually delve into examples, things that stand out, and how they hide red flags. (alright, it’s on my to do list)

I hope it’s helped someone, but I didn’t put my-all into this (I’ve been trying to pump out an article a day, sometimes the quality dips signifigantly) and now I feel kind of bad about that because I could have made this a much better article and so much more helpful (and I will write a new one, on this theme.) I suppose some of pumping out lots of articles is about finding out where there’s overlap in what I’m interested in writing and what others are interested in reading and delving deeper into those areas.

For: $0.57

A mid length article about the problems that accompany unchallenging schooling.

In terms of topics I like that you like, I like the topic of optimizing education and how brains work and child development and how those things intersect, (and zones of proximal development) and I’m glad that I’m not alone in this.

For: $0.39

Yes! so glad to see this in my top 5. I’m passionate when it comes to developing empathy, This is the way to change the world.

I’ve got a few things that careers can do to help young kids develop empathy (and a bit of a reminder that they already have some, although it’s not always obvious, it may need some help to bloom.)

For: $0.25

More about narcissists, I don’t know if I should be sad that people feel the need to read this or glad that they are reading it. (I also accidently used the same picture twice.) So many things that narcissists do disguise themselves as things that healthy people do. (and between them hiding behind that fact “are you really complaining about me caring about you” says the love-bomber and controlling-via-concern partner, and their victims being unsure about what’s going on, it can get very confusing.) Hiding their control behind reasonable boundaries is only one of many examples of this.

For: $0.23

I think I’m seeing a theme here…

Honourable mentions (because I like them), 6 and 7 were All About Octopus!

What did they have in common?

I picked up on the theme or Narcissism and Empathy, with only schoolwork not fitting in. (I’m sure I wrote about other topics too…)

What else, they varied in length and style. I had that one photo twice, (it was a good photo for the topic) but other than that I couldn’t see much of a trend in pictures (I’m sure attention grabbing is good, people perhaps, there wasn’t as much contrast as I expected. I’m not sure I’ll check back in with picture qualities next month.)

The titles were mostly simple, clear, and described what would be in the articles. Why schoolwork shouldn’t be too easy was the only one leaving us with a question to answer, the others were all a “this is____” style of tittle.

I know I linked the octopus articles at the bottom of many of my other articles and I’m sure that contributed to them being 6th and 7th, I’m not sure how many of the top 5 I linked at the bottom of other articles. That may have played a role.

My Personal Top 5

(That I published in April)

I’m happy with my actual top 5, But most of them were published in March, so I’ll pick my personal top five that I’ published in April here:

Continuing with the Empathy Development theme. Empathy doesn’t stop developing when we start school, and teens don’t enjoy the same activities as preschoolers do (although there’s some overlap for all of us) so here is how empathy can continue to develop during adolescence.

Because It’s a fun concept to think about, but a fun concept with some backing in science and good reasons, so start peeing in the dark. And if you don’t know why you should, click the above link and find out.

Because I just really like octopus and this is the last in my octopus series (probably).

Because I’ve struggled so much with achieveing big goals in my life, but mini goals have taken me a long way and helped me achieve a lot. This would have been useful to me years ago, and I hope it can be useful for somebody else today.

Is it perhaps because I lack empathy? Am I the empathy lacking narcissist that my readers were reading about? Or is it something about the craft of writing and being ‘made’ to care about fictional characters. (spoiler, it’s the latter, although that doesn’t rule out the former.)

How Much Money?

So I mentioned that I wrote something every day. Or actually, that I binge wrote and published every single day. So I’m sure that those of you who are looking at writing on medium and joining the partner program are wondering how much money you will make, on medium.

Well, that’s going to be up to you, how well you can write and how popular you get and so much more, so I can’t answer that question, but what I can answer is the related question. How much did I earn?

And in April I made $5.21

So I guess that opening pic should have looked a bit more like:

Actually a bit less than that. But it is still more money than last month, and I’ve only been on medium since January. Perhaps one day I’ll get this photo to look like the top one.

In fact only one of my top 5 articles was written in April. The rest were written in March. So even though I didn’t get paid minimum wage for writing these articles, (or any of the ones I wrote in April) they may (I hope) continue to trickle money my way for years to come, eventually crossing the threshold of minimum wage and continuing even further. (I can hope)

And (again I hope) that as I get better at writing my articles will improve and hopefully I can transfer that improvement into more money too.

Takeaways For Next Month

I want to do this every month, and try to use the things I learned by looking back to improve my work going forwards. (this is the second time)

It may be some time before I use my improvements, As I’ve already binge written quite a bit, but I have a new idea for a series because of doing this write up, a series where I compare the things that narcissists do with the things that everyone does that a narcissist uses as a cover to conceal and confuse us.

But while useful, that’s kind of depressing, therefore, to help me keep my sanity I’m also going to continue with my ‘empathy building’ articles (I’ve already got a few ready to go, so that’s good.) and more hopeful and practical articles about child development and optimizing learning (for adults as well as kids.)

On the practical note I’ll try to remember that straight forward descriptive headlines are great! (and I’m really glad to find that.)

With that said, for those of you who are here to learn more about the possibilities of medium and maximize your pay form it, I wish you all the best with the writing of your articles, and the making of money too.
