My Medium Marketing Strategy — Anybody Can Do This

Photo by Christine Donaldson on Unsplash

I want to unveil the Medium marketing strategy that’s helped me get 70,000 to 300,000+ monthly views on the platform, driving thousands of views to my stories and thousands of dollars into my bank account.

Marketing is pretty straightforward.

You want to shine a light on something — a story, digital product, your website, whatever, so you tell others about it. You market it.

Here’s how I do my marketing on Medium.

My marketing strategy on Medium that anybody can adopt

The truth is, I do very little marketing for Medium.

Other than sharing a few posts to my Twitter account, I don’t do anything.

Because Medium is such a powerhouse publisher with built-in social tools that allow me to grow my followers plus, it has a super high DA (domain authority) which means I can keyword rank search terms much easier and get search traffic, I’m happy that I don’t have to do much promotion outside of a few social shares throughout the month.

My social sharing strategy is so random and scattered, that I couldn’t even tell you that I share to Twitter X times per month. It varies every single month and it’s not consistent at all.

What does that mean?

I think if you are promoting your Medium content then you’re way ahead of the curve.

I’m not sure if writers are actively promoting their work or not but I know that promotion is not needed to make a full-time income from the platform (from MPP or not).

And, to clarify, I’m talking about outside Medium promotion where I’m promoting my Medium stories outside Medium.

What I do practice is on-platform Medium marketing/promotion.

Let me explain…

Off-platform vs On-platform marketing of your Medium stories

Off-platform marketing is where you promote your work outside Medium (like sharing to Twitter or your email list).

On-platform marketing is where you promote your Medium work on Medium.

How?

Within your Medium stories.

It’s called internal linking and it’s a critical part of SEO (search engine optimization).

On every single Medium story I publish, I try to share at least 1–3 of my other Medium stories in that post. My goal is to make sure the share is relevant and would grab the attention of the reader.

It should complement the original story but it certainly doesn’t have to.

I’m doing this in the story you’re currently reading. This one!

This is a practice I started putting into play when I began taking Medium more seriously about 6 months ago or so.

I made it my mission to treat my Medium writing like a full-time job and so far, it’s paid me like one, earning up to nearly $6,000/month from the Medium Partner Program alone!

See…

Is on-platform marketing the way to go?

1,000% yes!

But, that doesn’t mean you have to leave off-platform marketing in the dust. If you’re serious about really pushing more traffic to your stories, I think you should try both.

If I were to promote my Medium stories off-platform more actively, this is what I’d do

Some quick wins for promoting Medium stories…

  • Share in your email newsletter
  • Tell your Substack subscribers
  • Social sharing on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tik Tok, etc. (I’ve talked to authors on Medium that created a Tik Tok account exclusively for sharing their stories and driving traffic)
  • Sharing on other community platforms you’re on (Reddit, etc.)

Takeaways

I market my Medium stories using a mix of on-platform and off-platform marketing. If I had to guess, it’d probably be 5% off-platform/95% on-platform.

If you’re wanting some marketing ideas to bring more traffic to your stories, I hope this article gave you some ideas.

Are you marketing your Medium stories? If so, what are some ways you’re currently marketing your Medium stories?
