From $2 to $5,000+ per Month on Medium — Here’s What I’ve Learned

If you’re trying to make money on Medium, I’m here to tell you that it can happen and I’m proof.

I spent months earning just a few bucks per month on the platform until I made some key changes in my writing. It wasn’t long before I started seeing progress and my earnings transformed.

From $2 per month to $30/month followed by $431/month then just under $6,000/month a few months later.

Here’s what I’ve learned growing my Medium income.

How to grow your income on Medium

First, there are several ways you can make money on Medium.

The headline of this article is talking about just one of them, the Medium Partner Program but MPP is probably the lowest paying income stream you can gain from writing on Medium.

You can also monetize your writing through:

• Partnerships
• Client work
• Selling products and services
• Email marketing

From Medium I’ve been able to gain clients, I sell my digital products consistently every month, and I’m looking into email marketing next.

Full-time income, yes, full-time job, no.

It’s the dream, isn’t it?

Make full-time pay without full-time hours. That’s what I have done here on Medium. I work around 10 hours a month and make a full-time income (based on where I live).

So rapid fire-style, here are 12 writing tips that I follow to make money on Medium…

1. Treat my writing like it’s my full-time job
2. Engage with my readers
3. Self-publish and publish to publications
4. Write about interesting topics
5. Write about what my audience wants to know about
6. Be transparent
7. Use lots of graphics, screenshots, embeds, etc.
8. Short paragraphs, short sentences
9. Write about my passion
10. Share some insights from my personal life
11. Write around a niche
12. Tag the same topics

Here are some ideas for how to make money through the options I mentioned above…

Medium + Partnerships

This is about using the exposure you get on Medium to make partnership deals, whether it be partnering on the launch of a course, sponsored posts on your personal blog or other ways to partner.

Medium + Clients

Find clients right on Medium.

Use your profile as your digital business card, writing a short blurb about what you do, accolades, etc. Don’t forget to link your website, if any.

Medium + Selling Products/Services

Use Medium to plug your products.

I’ve done this in a handful of my stories and as a result, I’ve grown my ebook sales tremendously!

Medium + Email marketing

Then there’s Medium and email marketing, probably the most lucrative way you can make money from the platform.

While I haven’t taken advantage of this much yet, I plan to in the coming weeks.

Grow your email list, put your readers into a sales funnel, provide value, help them, and sell your products.

At the end of the day…

I use the writing tips I shared plus some of these monetization strategies to get the most out of Medium possible while building an audience, helping others, connecting, and making friends.
