I’ve been making a full-time income on Medium for 6 Months — Here’s what I’ve learned

Late last year I returned to Medium after taking a break. I decided to take things seriously and really see how far I could go with the platform.

I was able to go from $30 to $5,999 a month within a few months and now I earn a full-time income (in my area) on Medium. Here’s what I’ve learned…

5 Things I’ve Learned While Making a Full-Time Income on Medium

1. Success isn’t guaranteed right away

I have been on Medium for 2+ years. I had over 100 articles published on the platform before I decided to up my efforts and treat my writing here as a business.

Those 100 articles published were 100 opportunities to grow my audience, increase traffic, and make money on the platform.

But, it didn’t happen.

Taking the break allowed me to come back refreshed and with a new perspective. I made changes and I saw results.

While my results aren’t typical, don’t let that discourage you.

There are plenty of writers here on Medium that make more than $1,000/month and many that earn a full-time income including some new writers that literally went from zero to thousands per month within a few months.

Success isn’t guaranteed right away for many but, also consider what success means to you.

Income?

The number of fans you have?

Traffic?

Set a goal for yourself and then take action. Anything is possible.

2. If you want full-time income, you’ve got to treat your side hustle like a full-time job

That’s exactly what I did after I came back from my break.

When I returned, I was publishing a whopping 2–3 articles per day (that’s 60 to 90 articles a month) while doing these things:

  • Engaging with my readers
  • Responding to questions and comments
  • Researching story ideas and giving my audience the content they were craving

I didn’t give full-time hours to this endeavor but I did give a full-time effort, and it paid off.

3. Income fluctuations happen

I have gone from making nearly $6K a month, down to $3K and up again. It’s a rocky rollercoaster and your income is not guaranteed on Medium.

I have also read stories of writers taking a break and coming back to basically start all over again.

Income on this platform is not guaranteed.

Prepare yourself for that and to guard against those income swings, look into diversifying your income with multiple income streams.

4. There’s more to income earning potential than the Medium Partner Program

This is the story you want to read (I wrote it)…

If you’re not at 100 followers and not in MPP or if you are, there’s more money to be had from writing on Medium.

Much more!

Don’t rely on just MPP to make income as a Medium writer.

5. Networking is everything

Don’t think it’s all about the writing here.

It’s not.

Networking on and off the platform is key.

Not only do you get the chance to collaborate and connect with interesting people, but you also get the opportunity to learn, make friends, make money, and a wealth of other benefits.

The social network a lot of Medium readers and writers are into is Twitter.

I’m trying to get better at using the platform myself.

For networking off Medium, it seems to be the platform to be on.

Takeaways

These are some important lessons I’ve learned going from a few bucks a month to a full-time income on Medium.

I’m so humbled to have reached nearly 12,000 followers, and hundreds of email subscribers, and make money on Medium through multiple income streams.

If this is a goal for you, don’t give up. It can happen.
