My Journey to 1,111 Followers

It’s taken a few years, but as my follower count and reads are increasing, the rate of engagement increasing has accelerated.

It felt like only yesterday when I had achieved a follower count of 888, an angel number. This achievement was auspicious not only because of the number being an angel number, but because it signified that I was close to the 1,000 follower mark and, more so, that I was finally achieving a semblance of success on this platform.

Funny enough, soon after, my follower count skyrocketed to 1,000 followers and beyond; and my reader views also clocked in at 3,333 views.

And a few days later, I come to see that my follower count has reached the angel number of 1,111 followers.

While the recurrence of these angel numbers on this platform is an encouraging, even auspicious sign for me, I’ve also learned that views and follower count do not directly correlate with earnings. Though views and follower count can help, what is more important is true engagement — and reads from paying Medium members.

My most passionate topics remain spiritual and personal growth, but my articles that have gone most viral are those that do so for their controversial takes. The haters, ironically, have perhaps, most contributed positively to my article visibility and my earnings on this platform.

For it is my articles on conscious dating, on why women should be accorded respect, on why men should do more than the bare minimum, and on why coffee dates are not an ideal first date, in my perspective, that have earned me the most money and gained the most views on this platform.

So I’ve learned to lean into writing my controversial takes, to not filter myself, while also supporting my arguments with research and articles that show my stances have a historical precedent to stand on.

I still have yet to hit my $100/month goal of earnings, but seeing how much more quickly my readership has been growing since reaching certain milestones has been encouraging.

While I would still like some of my less controversial articles to achieve similar or greater virality as my controversial articles have, I am happy and grateful for the successes — if minor — that I have reached on this platform.

And I’d say that the double-whammy of angel numbers recently (the 3,333 views and 1,111 followers) is reason enough to celebrate and continue to stay motivated as a writer.
