I penned this vital story despite my busy schedule, encouraged by my thoughtful editorial team. Although they disseminated an editorial bulletin to notify our community, the limited number of followers on our publication account might constrain its reach to a broader audience.

To give you the context of my story, I received many inquiries from our subscribers via email and my publication Slack workspace in the last few days, informing me that their accounts were suspended for unknown reasons.

As automatic account suspension is a prevalent issue, I recommended that they reach out to Medium’s support team for resolution. Nevertheless, some members, including Friends of Medium, indicated that their accounts might not be reinstated due to policy violations, indicating that the issue wasn’t solely related to spam.

The positive aspect is that one of the directors, Buster Benson, left a clear message in a pertinent story explaining the reasons behind these substantial account suspensions. He pointed out that Medium has no intention to suspend legitimate accounts.

Buster’s message is encouraging because it demonstrates Medium’s willingness to reassess the situations of affected members and lift suspensions if they were made in error. I believe Medium will issue a post to inform the community.

You might be curious why I personally penned this story.

Why I Wrote This Story Personally

Firstly, given my overwhelming workload, it serves my self-interest to alleviate the influx of email and Slack messages to inform my readers and contributing writers of my publications.

However, the second and paramount reason is my empathy and compassion for those whose accounts were erroneously suspended while highlighting the challenges of Medium.

Lastly, I aim to share my insights and experiences regarding Medium as an authentic, trustworthy, and equitable platform that amplifies the voices of countless writers and facilitates global knowledge dissemination.

I believe I am well-suited to author this post as a significant stakeholder of this remarkable platform and as a professional with over 40 years of experience in the technology and information management industry, familiar with the advantages and disadvantages of emerging technological tools like artificial intelligence.

Invitation to Compassion for Victims

I feel deep empathy and compassion for ethical members whose accounts have been erroneously suspended. I share in their frustration, having faced a similar situation when my account was suspended in 2020 due to misunderstandings caused by a member regarding my ethical community-building efforts during the establishment of the ILLUMINATION publication. I documented the painful situation in a story.

With invaluable support from esteemed members, Medium meticulously reviewed the allegations and reinstated my account within 24 hours. I am deeply grateful for Medium’s fairness, which not only strengthened my trust but also empowered me to nurture this expansive community, thereby fostering the platform’s growth.

As one of our senior editors, Mike Broadly, DHSc, highlighted in a comment on the editorial bulletin, the issue of account suspension for legitimate members and ethical writers demands close attention and resolution.

Mike recently faced an issue where his account was incorrectly flagged by the spam filter, resulting in a temporary suspension. This experience deeply impacted his mental health, causing anxiety and a sense of disconnection from the community he actively engaged with and supported.

Like Mike, I fully endorse Medium’s commitment to combatting spam, scams, and fraudulent activities. These activities undermine the authenticity of this platform and pose serious issues to its members, as I previously outlined in my stories about spam and scam accounts.

It is crucial to acknowledge the limitations of current technological tools, as they are prone to detrimental mistakes. With over 40 years of experience in the tech industry, I have witnessed numerous errors that have caused serious issues for individuals.

Therefore, human intervention remains essential to ensure fairness and prevent unwarranted disruptions to the experience of innocent and valued platform members.

Advocating for a balance between automated systems and human oversight is crucial for maintaining the platform’s integrity and preserving the trust of its user base.

Recently, one of our editors, whom I have known since my early days on Medium, informed me that her account was suspended. Given my longstanding trust in this editor’s authenticity as an ethical member, I encouraged her to appeal the suspension, as her contributions and integrity have been proven through years of close collaboration.

I came across a comment from Debra G. Harman, MEd., the editor of another publication, on our recent bulletin, expressing her sadness and disappointment over the suspension of one of her trusted editor’s accounts. Like myself, Debra was deeply saddened by this incident.

Given that the impacted members may not have access to these posts, I encourage you to reach out to them and inform them about the appeal process available through Medium’s support system.

They can create a ticket via help.medium.com and clearly explain their situation. I firmly believe and trust that Medium will carefully and fairly assess the information provided during the appeal process.

I wish all affected victims of this incident the best. Now, let’s consider the other side of the coin.

Invitation to Compassion for Medium

I also urge my readers to consider compassion for Medium. Often, individuals hastily assign blame to the platform, labeling it as unfair, thoughtless, or ruthless, among other adjectives.

Yet, those not managing large businesses may struggle to comprehend the complexities of overseeing a global organization with numerous stakeholders, thousands of members, intricate systems, and persistent threats like cybersecurity attacks draining organizational resources.

Leading an enterprise like Medium demands resilience and fortitude. As a science and technology consultant intimately familiar with businesses’ pain points, I empathize deeply with their challenges.

Evaluating a company’s performance based on isolated incidents is unjust. Exceptions are inevitable and persist in any business process.

Managing 12 publications on this platform that support 27K writers has heightened my empathy for Medium. Over the past four years, my editorial team has encountered numerous challenges, including content theft (plagiarism), defamation of writers, and unfair attacks on volunteer editors aimed at gaining a competitive edge.

Addressing these issues and safeguarding the platform against harmful content consumes a significant portion of our time as volunteer editors.

Sadly, 80% of my time is allocated to managing difficult situations, leaving only 20% for supporting hardworking and ethical contributors. I wish I could reverse this ratio, as I feel my precious time is being wasted.

While I oversee only 12 publications, Medium must manage over 20,000 publications and thousands of members. Even if only 1% of these members create problems on the platform, the effort and resources required to handle them are substantial.

Managing Medium's complexities, with its countless features supporting writers and readers, is indeed a daunting task.

From a financial perspective, Medium’s business relies heavily on its members, necessitating the provision of a pleasant experience while ensuring writers are fairly compensated for their contributions. Balancing these two conflicting goals is undoubtedly challenging for any company.

However, the most critical aspect related to the topic of my post is cybersecurity. As you’re aware, Medium is a diverse and inclusive platform that allows anyone to create an account and participate, even without being a paid member.

This inclusivity is commendable, and Medium deserves recognition for this altruistic approach. Nonetheless, diversity and inclusion come with significant costs, as evidenced by my publication, ILLUMINATION, which I established on these principles.

While many individuals are ethical and supportive members of a community, there will always be a small fraction who abuse and misuse platforms for their own gain.

Recently, there has been a surge in organized fake accounts targeting Medium, duplicating the profiles of reputable writers, and attempting to deceive readers.

This unfortunate situation has occurred four times to me, with my account being duplicated earlier today, leading to spam messages being sent to my readers under false pretenses. I’m grateful that the support team acted swiftly to remove the offender.

Unfortunately, the same scenario has affected several of my editors and many of my proteges, highlighting the significant strain on Medium’s resources caused by these fake accounts. As a result, I have developed strong empathy and compassion for the platform.

Despite these challenges, I believe it’s important to recognize and highlight a few strengths and valuable characteristics of Medium, given my years of involvement as a reader, writer, editor, and publication owner.

I personally have not encountered any instances of intended unfairness from the company. Whenever I’ve faced an issue, the support team has amiably and promptly resolved it.

I have never perceived any arrogance or belittling; instead, I have consistently found the support, management, and leadership to be courteous.

It is important to recognize that every business organization faces its own set of challenges. Having worked with large corporations like IBM and Siemens, as well as government organizations like NATO, I have seen firsthand that even entities with extensive resources and years of experience encounter similar issues. None of them were perfect.

Therefore, if a wealthy organization like IBM is not flawless, it is unrealistic to expect perfection from a smaller organization like Medium, which operates with limited funds. It is crucial for us to understand and empathize with the tremendous challenges faced by this platform.

Conclusion

I am confident that Medium will address this recent issue with the seriousness it deserves and take the necessary action. As a supportive community, I encourage you to extend empathy and compassion to both the victims of this recent incident and to Medium as the governing body.

Takeaways

The Medium community should support those impacted by recent incidents with empathy while maintaining trust in the platform’s ability to address issues effectively.

Members should extend empathy and understanding to both those affected by account suspensions and Medium as it navigates the challenges of managing a diverse and inclusive platform.

Members encountering account suspension issues should promptly contact Medium’s support team for resolution, ensuring clear communication about the situation without being defensive.

The platform should continue its commitment to fairness and transparency by reassessing account suspensions and providing clear explanations for policy violations.

Platform management needs to enhance communication channels to ensure the community receives timely and effective notifications, especially regarding account suspensions and policy violations.

While automated systems are valuable, Medium should prioritize human oversight to maintain platform integrity and effectively address complex issues affecting the well-being of ethical members.

The platform administration must remain vigilant against cybersecurity threats, including fake accounts targeting users, and take swift action to protect the community and keep members informed and up-to-date.

Members should recognize the limitations and growing challenges Medium faces in managing a platform of its scale and complexity, understanding that perfection is unrealistic in such contexts.
