My First Month on Medium in Numbers
What a ride!
I’ve been writing on Medium for one month now; I published my first story here on August 31st. My thoughts about my first month in one sentence: What a ride!
My experience on Medium so far has been even better than I expected. I had high expectations, and this platform has exceeded them.
I knew about Medium before but I didn’t know you can actually make money from the platform itself until I watched Zulie Rane’s YouTube videos. I thought Medium is just good for content marketing and getting people to sign up for your e-mail list.
I got instantly excited when I heard you can actually make money writing here. Because that’s what I want: To make money doing what I love. There is nothing I love as much as writing.
There is magic in numbers, so I’m going to give you numbers. They tell you concretely what is possible to achieve in one month.
Of course, each person has a unique journey. There is no point in comparing yourself with others. But I find it interesting and inspiring to know details about other people’s Medium journeys, so I’m sharing mine.
This number is the most important one because you don’t get very far without followers on Medium. Especially now that you need 100 followers to even start making money here.
When I joined Medium, I thought it would take more than a month to even reach 100 followers. Now it’s been one month and I have more than 300 followers. I’m grateful for all my followers, thank you!
30 Stories Published
I have published 30 stories so far, so I’ve managed to publish almost daily. That alone is fantastic; I never thought I would be able to publish daily on any platform. And I never have been, until now! There’s something about Medium that made me go all-in from the start.
I published mostly new content. 6 of my 30 stories have been published before on my WordPress blog.
5 Stories Curated
5 out of my 30 stories were chosen for further distribution. 4 out of the 5 curated stories are about Autism. All my stories about Autism have been curated, so I suppose I should write more about Autism! It was quite encouraging that the second article I published on Medium was curated.
These stories were curated:
$38 Earned
I thought I would only earn cents during my first month, so I was thrilled with how much I earned right away. The $38 I earned is not even for a whole month, because I was accepted on the partner program on September 13th. So, I earned $38 in only two and a half weeks which is very encouraging to me.
I have tried almost anything when it comes to making money online, and I’ve never earned $38 within the first couple of weeks before. Medium seems like a far more likely place to make some serious money than any other platform I’ve tried. And like I said, I’ve tried everything; Self-hosted blog, affiliate marketing, Google ads, print on demand…
7 Publications Published My Stories
I self-published my first story on Medium, which was a beginner's mistake. Then I found out how the publications work. So far, I have written for 7 publications:
