I took a risk with this story and it paid off.

Today, I got an e-mail from Medium announcing one of my stories now has 50 fans.

The article with 50 fans is my most popular Medium story so far. The story is “What if Autistic People Were the Majority?”. It has 2K views so far. That’s over four times as many views as my second most popular article has gained.

Why is this article so popular? I think the secret is that this story has a unique point of view. It’s a satire about an imaginary world in which autistic people are the majority. This perspective enables a unique way to talk about autism and how autistic people are treated in society.

I had some doubts about this article before I hit publish. I was wondering if people would find this story funny or if they would understand it.

Also, satire and humor writing is a new area to me. This kind of writing is something I started to experiment with recently. And I’m glad I did.

Based on the comments I’ve received on this story, it seems people have understood the message of this story very well. Some readers also had a good laugh which is always great when you write humor.

Now I’m just left wondering how to do it again. How to write another article that really resonates with readers without repeating myself? I don’t get insanely great writing ideas daily. I wonder if some writers do?

So, what’s the lesson here? Take risks with your writing! Do something no one has done before. Be brave. Don’t be mediocre. Try writing something that is out of your comfort zone.

If you think everyone might not agree with your story, and it’s somewhat controversial, that’s a good sign!
