My First Activity Book is Almost Complete (KDP Blog: Jan 28, 2024)
I didn’t realise how tough and time-consuming creating an activity book could be. Yes, it’s easy if you’re just pulling 100 different graphics from Freepik.com for a colouring page interior. However, what I’ve done with this book to make it unique and stand out is much more complex. I’ve had to work with not just my VA, but also a freelancer from Upwork and a friend. It took the four of us to finish this book.
The process began on January 11th when I asked my VA to review a failed activity book from last year and think of ways to improve it. He did just that, and initially, my plan was to replace the old book cover and interior. However, as we added new features to the book, it became evident that the revised interior would need more pages than the original, leading to the creation of an entirely new book.
To keep this article short, it’s now January 28th, and my interior is completely ready. My VA is finalising the cover, and then all that’s left is to do keyword research, come up with a suitable title, sort out the other metadata, and then press the publish button!
I have no idea whether or not the book will be a success, but I thoroughly enjoyed making it and am hopeful to create many more. Colouring and activity books, though they take a long time to create, can be more rewarding compared to other types of books. Yes, the niches are more competitive, but the demand can also be incredibly high.
Total spend on this Book:
Creating this book cost more than I expected. Here’s the breakdown:
- Research (by my VA): $15
- Graphics creation (from an Upwork freelancer): $180
- Interior creation (by my VA): $73
- Interior quality and error checks (by a friend): $20
- Book cover (by my VA): $40
- A+ content (to be designed by my VA): $25
Altogether, this book has cost me about $371, including Upwork and PayPal fees. It’s a big amount to spend on a book, but I’m very happy with the outcome and proud of venturing into medium-content books. My aim is to publish 20–30 of these types of books in 2024.
