Ways to Differentiate Books (KDP Blog: Jan 22, 2024)
I learned about the importance of product differentiation during my short, yet insightful stint with Amazon FBA. Although that business endeavour did not pan out, the critical lesson of consistently differentiating products has been a guiding principle as I transitioned to KDP.
Since starting KDP in 2019, I have seldom published a book without differentiating it. My publications have primarily been logbooks and journals, and for most niches, I have always dedicated time to brainstorming ideas for ways to make my books stand out against the competition.
Differentiation doesn’t need to be complex; even simple changes can be effective. Ways to differentiate include:
- Introducing a unique design to the niche — For instance, if most books in your niche use dull colours, consider a vibrant cover or a distinctive design scheme.
- Offering a different size — Many niches feature books of similar sizes. Introducing an alternative size can make your book stand out, but ensure it’s appropriate for the niche.
- Increasing the page count — If the average page count in your niche is around 100–110 pages, create a book with a slightly higher count.
- Creating a unique-looking interior — A compelling interior design is as important as the cover. Strive to make yours not just different, but more appealing.
- Adding a unique feature — Consider adding something special to your book. For example, in a “Blood Pressure Log Book” niche, you could include a blood pressure chart if most books lack one.
These are just a few ways for differentiation that have come to my mind. I’ll delve into other ways in a future article.
What have I been getting up to with KDP lately?
Recently, I have found myself with more free time, thanks to hiring a VA and delegating many tasks. Today, I focused mainly on niche research and drafting briefs for potential projects for my VA. Though not all briefs that I create are pursued, many do and I then instruct my designer to work on them.
Today, I created a brief for my designer to make a second cover for a successful book he originally designed. I also worked on a research-based brief involving an activity book niche.
This wrapped up my approximately two-hour KDP session today.
