My Daughter Wants To Marry Me

I have agreed to it

Photo by Dylan Sauerwein on Unsplash

It was a perfect Sunday afternoon; my wife was pottering around the house, my two girls were playing with their toys just in front of me, and I was looking through some old wedding photo's.

My oldest daughter took an interest and asked if she could look at the pictures.

I was delighted, of course, you can, she sat next to me and asked who a few of the people were, so I explained this to her.

She said her mother was beautiful and looked like a princess; my daughter is very much into dressing up as a princess, so she was intrigued by her mother's wedding dress.

When she asked me what I meant by her mother, and I was married, "dad, what is married?" I thought for a moment, thinking how I could explain this to a three-year-old (at the time).

So I explained that when two people meet each other, sometimes they love each other so much that they never want to be apart and would like to stay together forever, so they usually get married and live together.

"So they get married?" she asked, so I said yes, then explained people may plan a wedding where lots of friends and family come over to celebrate and have a big party.

My daughter loves a party as all children do, she asked for clarification, so you meet someone you love, dress up as a princess and have a party, then stay with them forever?"

To keep it simple, I said "yes."

"Daddy, I want to marry you."

Crap, I thought, how do I explain this one? However, my wife found it very amusing and offered no support, and she just kept smiling.

I tried to explain that because I married mummy, I cannot marry someone else (keeping it simple for her) and that I cannot marry my daughter; oh my gosh, the tears I had was no one's business.

She broke her little heart and was inconsolable, so her mother came over to cuddle her in explaining what I had already said; my daughter was having none of it.

She was red in the face, the tears were rolling down her eyes, and she kept saying, "I want to marry daddy, I want him to be with me forever".

In minutes we were all in tears; what could I do? So I called her over to me and said, "I will marry you, come to dad", she ran to me still in tears and said, "I love you, daddy."

I told her that I loved her too and that we would have a big party soon (her birthday was coming up, so that was true to a degree); after 10 minutes of consoling her, she calmed down.

What turned out as a nice day quickly turned into a very emotional one; I am so blessed to have my family around me and to share their love, we have since had her 4th birthday, which she loved, and there has been no more talk about marry dad.

As always, I had shed a tear writing this as it brings back memories of that day and how we could not stop her crying, love is undoubtedly a strange thing; how lucky am I.
