Is it worth promoting?

When the Medium referral program was launched, I did not know what to think about it; my first thought was I would now get less money for members reading my articles.

I was annoyed about this, and I know writers who left because of this decision; I wrote an article about it when it launched, asking where our money goes?

In that article, I answered the two burning questions below.

1. If a non-paying member reads my story then signs up within 30 days, whether as my referred member or not, will their read time be counted in my earnings?
2. If a non-paying member reads my story then clicks on “Upgrade” to become a paying member, will that be counted as a referred membership or not be counted as a referred membership?

A month or so in, I wrote an article about my earnings to date; it was not a pretty sight; check out the article below if you want to have a nose.

So we have now moved on a few months, and I have completely changed my attitude about the Medium Referred Program, with good reason. I am now getting more regular people signing up to Medium through my account.

This is what Medium had to say about the program:

Readers can now support you more directly with their Referred Membership, while still getting access to all of the writing on Medium. For every reader that a Partner Program writer converts to a paying Medium member, the writer will receive half of that reader’s membership fee, net of standard payment processor fees. Referral earnings are recurring as long as the reader’s membership plan remains active, and will be in addition to Partner Program earnings based on member read time.

So is it worth promoting this referral scheme? Can you make any real money from it? Medium say that you can, and this is the table they produced showing you your potential earnings.

In reality, what could we earn? I know some top performers are now making $200-$400 a month from it; unfortunately, they will be few and far between.

Well, let me show you what I have earned so far; these figures take me up to the 3rd of January 2022, and I have just had a notification that I will have another one tomorrow, so that will be two referrals in four days during January.
