Happy New Year, Musers! We hope your Christmas celebrations were filled with joy and that you’re now refreshed and charging into the New Year with renewed creativity!

Now that our MuserScribe publication has been running for nearly a year, I thought it was time to review and tweak our submission guidelines.

MuserScribe is your space to share the Muse …

Fiction and poetry remain niche here on Medium — which is why I founded MuserScribe as a home (and base) for lovers of fiction, and poetry.

MuserScribe comes with a caveat — we require you to think about the muse or inspiration behind your work … and write about it!

So, what exactly does this mean? Well, one of two things.

★ If you’re submitting a short story, chapter extract, or verse — simply add a few sentences at the opening or close of your piece talking about who or what inspired you to write it.

★ Or, you can write an entire piece just about the muse … whatever it was that compelled you to write in the first place, or compels you to write now … or if the fickle muse has flown away (horrors) you can write about that too!

So, onto our tweaks …

☆ Submissions: MuserScribe will accept up to two stories per writer per week. Those who also write for our sister publication, The Scriber’s Nook, can also submit up to two stories per week (on top of their submissions to The Scriber’s Nook).

☆ Remember, MuserScribe is based on different criteria to that of The Scriber’s Nook. Please check MuserScribe’s requirements before submission.

★ Length: We accept submissions up to seven minutes on Medium’s timeclock. We have many writers and our aim is to devote equal time to each and every one of you and your submissions. As editors, longer pieces not only monopolise our schedule — but take time away from your fellow writers. Submissions therefore longer than seven minutes will be declined (as of March 2024).

It’s perfectly acceptable, however, for longer stories (over seven minutes) to be split into two or more parts and submitted separately over separate days.

☆ Kicker: Use Medium’s kicker tool for classification — eg, fiction, non-fiction, short story, etc. Your readers will thank you! Kick back up one from your title to produce the kicker option.

☆ Title and Subtitle: Please use both. Titles should be in title case. Highlight your title and click on the large ‘T’. For your subtitle, highlight and click on the small ‘T’.

☆ Images: Please ensure all image sources are cited, whether from Unsplash, Pexels, AI-software, or your own snapshots. In keeping with Medium guidelines, stories will not be published without accredited images.

☆ Publication Time: MuserScribe publishes five days a week — Monday to Friday. We aim to publish well within 48 hours of receiving your submission. Any submissions received Friday evenings, or over the weekend — Saturdays, and Sundays, are scheduled for review and publication on Mondays. Very occasionally, your editor may be ‘out of office’ eg, trips away, vacations, and so on. Please bear with us. Any submissions received during these periods will be published on our return.

☆ Private Notes: Should we need to discuss your submission before publication, we’ll leave feedback via a private note. Please make sure ‘Private Notes’ is ON your account settings. Be sure to check these as your article won’t be published until we receive your response.

☆ MuserScribe reserves the right to make minor changes to improve readability and ensure that publication standards and Medium rules are adhered to. This is part of an editor’s role in maintaining publication standards.

☆ Editing: Please use Grammarly, or similar free software to proofread your work. As an editor, minor edits (usually for typos and clarity) may be made. If major amends are required (eg five or more) a private note will be left for you.

☆ We don’t accept previously published pieces — these tend to disappear down Medium’s time well and our readers just won’t see them.

☆ Genre: MuserScribe does not publish slasher-style or any graphic violence or pieces that promote racism, sexism, abuse, cruelty, or gender bias. All our writers should be aware of Medium’s rules. MuserScribe does not publish erotica or pornographic material.

☆ Tags/Topics: Medium allows you to use up to five tags or topics. Please use appropriate tags when submitting your story, eg Fiction, Storytelling, Romantic, Sci Fi, Horror, Memoir, Poetry on Medium, Relationships, Self Improvement, Life Lessons, etc. Always include ‘MuserScribe’ as your final tag.

☆ Community: As writers for MuserScribe, we support each other! We are respectful, we read, we engage and we clap, (yes, keep that finger down and enjoy the fireworks until it reaches a lovely❤️50❤️ ) Those 50 claps cost you nothing but the boost of morale for your fellow hard-working writers is priceless.

Summary

My vision is to create a community of writers sharing the magic … eg what it is that inspires each of us to write.

This sharing of ‘the muse’ is intended not only to help us reflect on our own creativity but also to form a library of collective processes for us all.
