Mindful-ness.

being aware in every moment is where liberation begins…#WednesdayWisdom

I like to think of it as mindful-ness — mindful awareness. This reminds me to stay in the present moment not focusing on the future or dwelling on the past. Everything we have the power to control is happening right here and now, only in this moment.

When we are aware:

  • we are alert to danger and can prevent harming ourselves and others through body, mind and speech
  • we know mental objects and impressions as they arise and can avoid indulging in and clinging to them
  • we stop things being born in the mind and proliferating them endlessly
  • we make the mind empty
  • we see clearly for ourselves
  • we ‘know’ that just because we think it, doesn’t mean we have to say it or do it

Right now what are you thinking, what are you doing?

When we observe like this, we are aware in the moment. It’s similar to when we watch the breath. We stop the mind and invite it to look at itself. Is it indulging in one of the two extremes of pleasure or pain? Is it calm and balanced, resting in the middle ground? Staying only with this ‘knowing’ we don’t need to carry things around, we can let go. This is where liberation begins.

May this teaching lead you to happiness; may it help you grow in truth. May you be freed from the suffering of birth and death.
