Life Lessons From a Spilled Smoothie

Day 93: Every event that happens in life is an opportunity

Crash! I stepped out of the car with a bag full of take-out lunch and a strawberry smoothie. The cup slipped out of my hands and broke on the ground. The contents of the once delicious drink were now mostly pink puddles on the driveway. I was able to rescue about one-quarter of the smoothie that was intact at the bottom of the cup. The rest was a lost cause.

I went inside to transfer it to another cup, and I had to tell my son the news. He was a bit sad as he was really looking forward to the smoothie. I allowed him to process his emotions and feel them. After a while, as we sat down to our lunch, he said he was sorry for getting so upset about the smoothie. I told him it was okay, it was another opportunity for tomorrow. I also said that I learned to slow down. To literally take one thing at a time. Next time, I will slowly take each item out on its own as there is no rush.

Today, we have another opportunity for a smoothie and some time together to chat and tell stories. I am thankful for that spilled smoothie because not only did it show me how to slow down and savor the moment, it gave me the chance to do something special today too. These are the daily lessons I am learning on my 100-day spiritual journey while exploring the book Letting Go by David R. Hawkins.

In the state of love, we wake up every morning and give thanks for another day of life, and we seek to make life better for everyone around us. -David R. Hawkins

These days I find myself pausing more before I react. This really helped me yesterday. I could have been very distraught about the smoothie spilling. I could have gotten upset about my son getting upset. Instead, I stopped and just allowed myself to be in the present moment, to allow feelings to flow. This helped my son come to his own conclusions with how he felt and why. This is a beautiful thing, allowing others to be with how they feel without judgment.

Because of the inner quiet, we have the ability to perceive the thoughts and feelings of others on a nonverbal level. -David R. Hawkins

Somehow I knew that if I stayed quiet and let the situation settle down, my son and I would come to our own conclusions. While we sat down to lunch, I considered lots of things that I could say. However, I had an intuitive feeling that both had already learned from this moment. There was nothing I needed to say. It was all there in non-verbal communication. When my son said that he was sorry for being upset, I knew he had learned just from being there and going through his emotions. There was no need to go on and on talking about it. Sometimes words are not needed when we have our inner voice.

Love illuminates the essence of and, therefore the lovability of others. This is because love opens the heart. Instead of perception, which perceives, the heart knows. The mind thinks and argues, but the heart knows and continues. -David R. Hawkins

My prayer and my intention for you today is that you see the opportunity in every situation. There is an opportunity in everything we perceive as a mistake. When we quiet our minds and center our hearts in love, we are capable of calmly going about our days. Sometimes words are not needed when we can feel what others need.

How can you find an opportunity in everything today?
