Let’s Love Our Boring Life Just as It Is

Content makes poor men rich; discontent makes rich men poor. — Benjamin Franklin

When January hit every year, we all become proactive on setting goals, meaning to change certain things in your life and hope by the year ends we will have better things, will start making better choices and will have more money or will lose the extra 10 pounds, start loving our old boring job or will have more authentic and deep connection with friends and family or will be able to afford the trips to Europe and what not.

And by the time January ends, all resolutions start fading away. If you look around you life right now-

  • Day is mostly filled with zillions of zoom meetings.
  • Your boss is still an asshole.
  • You are still doing shitty work and you want to “that” course that you purchased ages back.
  • The place you live in feels small now.
  • Endless questions from relatives- when will you have kids, when will you get married, when will you buy a bigger house or a car etc.
  • I still have those extra 5 pounds. Not good.

And so on and resolutions might go like this:

  • I will become consistent with my workouts or fitness routine.
  • I will lose those extra 10 pounds this year to fit in my favorite jeans.
  • I will travel more to exotic places.
  • I will read more books.
  • I will change my job/career this year with better pay and benefits .
  • I will eat healthy this year
  • Or maybe life is just a bore, no excitement and looking for make some changes

You get it, right, the list is endless. I know it seems like a daunting task to make a list of goals. By the time you are finished, you are already exhausted because there are so many things to do and achieve. We all want to get better every year and achieve greatest accomplishments.

However, this year, take a pause for a minute and look around. Maybe you just have everything that you might need to enjoy your life.

I know if you look back or when you are living one day at a time, nothing changes and life seems like an endless for loop.

Changes are good and it can bring you enthusiasm and motivation back on track, but to have a fulfilling life, we all need to feel that this moment- I have enough.

I’m seeing less and less happy people around me. No matter how much self-improvement they read or how much they grow at work, they’re just waiting for the next step and a big reward. The next step has no end. There’s always one waiting after.

Apparently, there’s some vision people see they want to get into. Like lots of labor will lead them to a shiny door that will be the end.

“As much money and life as you could want! The two things most human beings would choose above all — the trouble is, humans do have a knack of choosing precisely those things that are worst for them.”

― J.K. Rowling

The checklist goes like this — you should get married, have kids, have a job that you love with awesome paycheck and travel 50 countries all before you are 30.

And what do I do after 30? It’s a long life ahead. Why are we treating life as a sprint instead of a marathon?

I started doing an experiment . I should stay calm in my head even though my outside life is going crazy.

Now in my thirties, I’m very content with life, and I don’t think that makes me unambitious. I am looking forward to becoming a creative entrepreneur and learning slowly. It’s a choice you make to not sleep for 3 hours a day and take care of my body, and I don’t see how that equates to not being ambitious or hard working enough.

You have enough. You are enough.

We all have enough and it always will be if we remove greed from our life.

Everyone around me wants to earn more money or buy more stuff.

If you look at it from a negative perspective, there will never be enough money and your wardrobe will never have enough clothes because there’s no end to money and shopping. You will never be happy enough, especially when you open Instagram and see people relaxing and enjoying some exotic place you always dreamed of going to.

You will never be beautiful or rich enough because there is always somebody better. But is that really a reason to be unhappy? How far will you go to search for people you’re better than?

I promise you that when you look at it that way, your behavior and habits will change. There’s enough for everybody.

Living a simple or minimalistic life doesn’t need you to become a saint but it means, you are understanding the difference between want and need. It’s one more step forward to self awareness and becoming the wholesome person.
